I love the series so I had to check this out. Definitely check out the series before watching this movie. The series is WAY better.

I like this movie as much as all of the 6 seasons and the Christmas specials. None of my friends seem to like these DVD's at all! I can't help it if they are all dummards. If they could smarten up like me I think they would depreciate all of them.

5 out of 5 stars A movie that must be watched after the series.......2007-04-05

I've been a huge fan of this show. I own all the seasons and have already watched the 6th season, i'm so what addicted to it. Now when showing this show/movie to my friends theres a couple of things i do first. I'll show them the first season and second season to have them get the jist of the show. Simply being the show is so diffrent from anything in america that it takes some getting used to. But after a while you will quickly begin to enjoy the show. I've never met anyone who watched the whole first season and be displeased. Afterwards they'll love the movie as dearly as i do. I have shown the movie to a few before they seen any of the show and had mixed reviews. But never has someone whose watched a little bit of the show not like the Movie. Overall the movie is great, everyone from the shows i back on except trinity. The girl who plays trinity is an awful actress however shes not in it too much. You'll really enjoy this show if you're a true Trailer Park Boys fan.

1 out of 5 stars one of the worst for the brain dead.......2007-04-02

don't know why this elementary level movie could be a hit in canada. guess they also got messy education problem. i've tried to watch this movie several times, but had to eject it out of the player every time after 10 or 20 minutes. this is a horrible trashy movie. bad acting, bad script, bad of everything. it's like watching a bunch of mentally retarded people decided to make a movie, unless you are also retarded, you simply could not understand why and how this could call a movie. i've thought before that mtv's 2 'jackass' movies were pointless enough, but after this one, i finally realized that the young generation nowadays really got some serious problems: they like install boomboxes in their pickup trucks blasting out nerve shattering noises than soothing music; they prefer cars without mufflers; they prefer meaningless stuff and consider them cool; they prefer body piercing with rings and beads on their eyebrows, tongues, navels, even on their private parts; tattooing all over their bodies; wearing slashed jeans ....on and on. what becomes of this world?

Glamour girls Hilary and Haylie Duff (featured in Lizzie McGuire and 7th Heaven, respectively) star as cosmetic heiresses Ava and Tanzie Marchetta, whose lives get turned upside down when their deceased father's company is accused of selling toxic products. Wouldn't you know it, Ava and Tanzie decide to go all Erin Brockovich and investigate. Material Girls should be awful--but it isn't. It's not a great film, it may not even be a good film, but it's more watchable than it has any right to be, thanks to the confident and thoughtful guiding hand of director Martha Coolidge (Rambling Rose, Valley Girl). It's hard to say exactly how a director can keep something like Material Girls from being as insipid as, say, New York Minute. Coolidge injects some hint of awareness of what it actually means to be poor, casts some surprising actors (like Anjelica Huston, Prizzi's Honor; Brent Spiner, Star Trek: The Next Generation; and Lukas Haas, Brick), and somehow makes the Marchetta sisters both vapid and sympathetic--all of which is some impressive cinematic alchemy. The result is the most enjoyable film of Hilary Duff's career. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars A cool movie!.......2007-05-12

A really cool, funny video! I'll give it 4 stars, since its not Hilary's best movie, but it's worth too see!

1 out of 5 stars Not as Pleasant as Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Pulled. .......2007-04-14

I really wanted to like this movie because I think the Duff sisters are cute and actually have some potential. This movie has nothing about it to offer additional points to that train of thought. Hilary and Hayley are two spoiled brats who lose all their money, then get it back--an obvious parody of the ditzola factor the Hilton sisters live for real. About as painful, stupid and empty as My Date with the President's Daughter (UGH!), the only redeeming thing about this vapid little teen chick flick is Anjelica Houston. For good teen flicks that are thoroughly enjoyable, I highly recommend 10 Things I Hate About You and the old 80s classic hit, John Hughes' Sixteen Candles. Where this movie is concerned, I wouldn't recommend it to your dog's fleas.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best :-l.......2007-04-13

While I'm not a teen anymore, I still like to watch the occasional movie in this 'genre' (ones that appeal to the tween market) and I do normally like Hilary Duff but this was NOT GOOD.
Hilary was OK in this, but her sister was annoying. There were the odd funny moments here and there. The plot was OK (two rich kids lose their money and become broke, yet bounce back into riches again). It was mostly unbelievable, yet kind of cute if you are of the age that this was intended for. I think kids would like this, but I found it to be only average.

3 out of 5 stars Same cookie cutter, but still cute.......2007-04-10

Okay, same story line, rich person gets too comfortable, someone else is running the show, makes mistakes, rich person has to have a reality check and fix the world and everyone is better off because of it. It was still a cute movie. Suggest you watch, but don't buy.

Amazon.com essential video

After the tight plotting and quirky intensity of Fargo, this casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen (Ethan and Joel) brothers seems like a bit of a lark, and the result was a box-office disappointment. The good news is, The Big Lebowski is every bit a Coen movie, and its lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hairnetted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins? The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. Be sure to watch with snacks in hand, because The Big Lebowski might give you a giddy case of the munchies. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dude...this movie is awesome man.......2007-08-26

Ok, the first question you must ask yourself is, "Do you like the Coen Brothers?" Raising Arizona, Fargo, O' Brother where art thou, Do you like these movies. Well if you like their unique take of life and colorful characters then you also like this one. This has a lot of the same actors that are in most Coen Bros stuff and all of them are played to utter perfection. There is not a miscue to be found in these performances. The biggest problem this film had when it was realized is it was the Coen's follow up film to their Oscar winning Fargo. Many people who loved that movie were not Coen fans, went and saw this one, and didn't have the same appreciation for what this movie was suppose to be. This is one of the funniest movies you will ever see and is only equaled by other Coen movies. It's unlike Fargo is this is a niche film that will only be liked by a select few that "get" what it's about.

"The Dude" played by Jeff Bridges is an aging old California hippie that just wants to bowl and smoke pot but finds himself caught up in a complex kidnapping plot of Someone's wife that shares his last name. John Goodman plays the "dudes" best friend and is one of the funniest characters in the film. This is one to watch over and over. Like many smart comedies the jokes in this film are muti-layered and found only funny after a second or third viewing. Sometime it goes right over your head.

The Dude is such a great character you can't help but love him. Don't we all wish we could walk though life as clueless as the Dude...I know at times I wish I could. At first viewing I didn't get a lot of it's "jokes". I've seen this film about 10 times and feel like it's a truly remarkable character study due to the writing and brilliant acting. I can't watch it without having to stop it because I'm just laughing my ass off at the subtle brilliance displayed by these characters. The Dude abides.

4 out of 5 stars Not always hard on the logic enough.......2007-08-23

A simple film of total disorganization that is supposed to be funny. It is another "Pulp Fiction", but this time in chronological cutting order. The disorganized impression comes from the totally airy and eerie behavior of the characters. One more or less fake Jew who respects Sabbath when it is practical. An unemployed idler who lives on thin air, fresh water and all kinds of little gains and benefits he can find. A third rather detached younger one who will end up with a massive heart attack on a parking lot. They all play with theirs balls, I mean their bowling balls, because that is the only profession we know they have. Then they get entangled into some kind of embezzling by some rich man who is not rich but wants to pilfer some good amount of cash from the foundation he is a trustee of and at the same time get rid of his youngish latest wife who is hardly grown out of teenage puberty, without going through a divorce. Simple when you are as naïve as dumb can be and you don't know the alpha from the beta, not to mention the omega of crime in LA where you can end up playing the angel in no time. And they manage rather well since two will survive and one will die of too much emotion. Entertaining though slightly slow at times.

Easily one of the strangest movies I have ever seen, but oddly a title that I felt I needed to own. When I finally added it to my collection, I couldnt figure out why. This is a movie that should be watched by all. Even if you dont like it, you can still say you have seen it and tell your friends just how strange of a movie it really is.

A matinee programmer with lofty ambitions, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is best appreciated as a vintage showcase for the stop-motion animation of special-effects legend Ray Harryhausen. The hoary plot follows the cold-war formula that dominated science fiction movies of the 1950s: After an atomic bomb test in the northern polar ice cap, a gigantic dinosaur--the fictional "Rhedosaurus"--is awakened from eons of dormancy, plots an undersea course for the Eastern seaboard, and proceeds to wreak havoc on New York City, culminating in a showdown with military marksmen at the Coney Island amusement park. Stock footage and tissue-thin drama make this a by-the-numbers monster flick, further hampered by Eugene Lourie's lackluster direction and a wooden B-movie cast. And yet, Harryhausen's first independent effort retains its atomic-age fascination: Beast marked yet another technical milestone for Harryhausen's impeccable techniques, and its perpetual status as a sci-fi classic is duly acknowledged in the DVD bonus features, including a retrospective featurette and a latter-day reunion of Harryhausen and longtime friend Ray Bradbury, whose short story "The Fog Horn" served as this film's inspiration. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Near the Arctic Circle, an atomic bomb is detonated. This fearsome experiment disturbs the sleep of a giant rhedosaurus encased in ice for more than 100-million years and sends it southward on a destructive, deadly rampage. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a film of firsts. It spawned a new era of atomic-age creature features. It was the first screen adaptation of a work by fantasy fiction titan Ray Bradbury. And it marked the first time Ray Harryhausen had control over special effects. He came up with a fantastic creature (constructed at full scale, all 50 tons of it) that swims down from the north to run amok through New York City before being conquered in a spectacular Coney Island roller coaster finale. Take a classic ride. Unleash The Beast. Year: 1953

4 out of 5 stars big rhed comes homw.......2007-09-10

I am so glad that this has finally come out on dvd! My vhs copy was wearing out. Ray Harryhausens first solo project, and the one that firmly entrenched him as the all time master of the technique. The slow build up is intentionally reminiscent of King Kong, building expectation in the viewer. Then the action zooms along to the same sad ending. The bonus features are also excellent.

5 out of 5 stars ultimate monster movie.......2007-08-17

This is my favorite monster movie. Good acting . Godzilla is abit of a joke but this is played like it is for real. Pretty good music too.

3 out of 5 stars Adult Popcorn.......2007-07-06

This movie is what I call "Adult Popcorn." That doesn't mean you have to be one, but it helps.

When you are asked what movie you want to rent or buy, try this one.

Corny yes. Not great special affects. This is Jurasic Park 50 years before that movie was released. Old yes and fun to. Don't forget the popcorn.

4 out of 5 stars The very latest models for 1953.......2007-06-28

It's hard to realize why this early stop-motion animation "beast on the loose" film is so warmly remembered until you actually see it, since it doesn't seem from its description like it should be that special. Its plot of a monster released by atomic radiation attacking a city has been repeated again and again, and owes much to both the 1933 KING KONG and the 1925 THE LOST WORLD (as Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen, who respectively wrote its original story and created its effects, cheerfully admit in the accompaying feature). But in many ways this set the standard for the films of this sort that dominated the sci-fi films of the 50s, and the beast itself is really a marvel. Whereas King Kong was childlike, given to charming bits of curiosity and childish tantrums of rage, and the later (much inferior) Godzilla simply incarnated pure chaos, the Beast here has become much beloved over the decades because it is so ornery. It attacks fishing trawlers, lighthouses, diving bells and the docks of Manhattan for no good reason other than that it's particularly grumpy and ill-tempered, which makes it all the more adorable. (It even looks like a cross between a pit bull and a gila monster.)

As with most 1950s monster films, the stuff that comes in-between the Beast's rampages is pretty forgettable, although the Swiss Paul Hubschmid (here called Paul Christian) is a pretty unusual choice as the hero, and Paula Raymond, as the fretful assistant to a paleontology professor, is for some reason given a hilarious array of the very latest in New Look fashions in every scene she's in. Probably the film's producers figured if they couldn't give us the animated Harryhausen model of the rhedosaurus they'd have to give us something, so there she is sporting others sorts of the very latest models.

4 out of 5 stars Great 50s Classic.......2007-03-10

I remember watching this as a kid on MONA LISA Monster Theatre.Still a great 50s SCI-FI Flick. Harry Harryhausen is the best at his creature animations. This movie ia a must for all SCI-FI fans.

The mighty-muscled heroes and big-bottomed babes of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta inspired animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards) to create the swords-and-sorcery epic Fire and Ice. Bakshi uses a technique called rotoscoping, which uses live-action film of actors as the template for animation, allowing him to put realistic action into fantastic environments. The verisimilitude of movement in a cartoon can be startling, but that's about all Fire and Ice has to offer; the wafer-thin story, overwrought characters, and clumsy dialogue are vapid cliches. Of much greater interest are the extras in this two-disc set, including a making-of feature that demonstrates the painstaking process of rotoscoping; enthusiastic commentary from Bakshi, who's a jovial, down-to-earth guy with a thick Brooklyn accent; deliriously fatuous diary notes from one of the actors; and a feature-length documentary called Frazetta: Painting with Fire, which reveals the artist to be more intriguing than any of the barbarians he's famous for. The effusive praise of other fantasy artists and "Frazetta historians" occasionally veers into Spinal Tap territory, but it's fascinating watching Frazetta turn from a 1950s James-Dean-style tough guy into the king of fantasy art. Though his work is often dismissed as adolescent kitsch, the documentary persuasively argues that Frazetta deservedly dominates his corner of the art world. --Bret Fetzer

Description

From The Director Of The Original Animated LORD OF THE RINGS And The Illustrator Of CONAN THE BARBARIAN

It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE & ICE

This long-unavailable cult favorite has been remastered in High Definition from the original vault materials, remixed in stunning 6.1 DTS-ES and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX, and loaded with exciting Extras.

Disc 2 contains FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE, the acclaimed 93 minute documentary that explores the remarkable life and career of the man who changed fantasy art forever.

Fire and Ice (Ralph Bakshi, 1983)

Sometimes I wonder what on earth filmmakers were thinking when they made movies. More often, I wonder what I was thinking when I was enthralled with them. In this case, though, I don't need to do either--when Fire and Ice came out, I was fourteen years old, male, and not terribly experienced with the opposite sex--in other words, I was Ralph Bakshi's exact target audience. Now I'm thirty-eight, married, and have a more encyclopedic knowledge of eighties and nineties exploitation cinema (read: porn) than I'm sure anyone in my family would like to acknowledge; rewatching Fire and Ice these days, I look back and grieve that my fourteen-year-old self had such bad taste. (But then, in 1983, my all-time favorite movie was Deathsport. No, I can't explain it either.)

Fire and Ice, which All-Movie Guide calls "Bakshi's last stab at epic fantasy", concerns two kingdoms, the established human kingdom ruled by fire, and the upstart kingdom of outcasts and half-breeds, the kingdom of Ice. Needless to say, one is wise and good, and the other is twisted and evil. Interestingly, there are a few places in the script where denizens of either kingdom could waver from their one-dimensionality and suddenly bring depth and richness to the script; we're dangling there waiting for Bakshi to drop the apple into our mouths, but of course it's snatched away as quickly as it's offered. Cruel, I tell you. But then, no one's supposed to be paying attention to the script; we're supposed to be too busy, erm, "watching" Tigre (voice of Cynthia Leake), who starts the movie wearing something that looks as if it's supposed to be a diaphanous lavender negligee over a couple of pieces of filmy stuff that pass as underwear. But only for the first third of the movie, after which the negligee-thing goes away. Draw some luscious, and entirely unrealistic, curves, and the audience's collective brain will be interested in nothing else; at least, this seems to have been the thinking behind this production. (Add in a cameo from Batman--and I swear, the character looks like the ancestor of the animated version of Batman from the seventies--and you'll kill off the last few collective brain cells still struggling to recover from the onslaught of Tigre-flesh.)

But the worst part is that, after realizing all this, I still sat through the entire eighty-one minutes this weekend. I'm pretty sure I didn't drool, but there may be some extra gaps in the gray matter I should probably have my doctor take a look at. *

2 out of 5 stars Slow moving rotoscoped animation.......2007-05-26

The storyline for this movie was interesting, but took so long to get moving I started to lose interest. If it was a one-hour movie, it probably would have been more entertaining. The Big Bad Evil Ice Guy is attempting to conquer the Good Guy Fire King, but most of the time is spent with the Fire King's scantily clad, fantasy-proportioned princess running from ape-like soldiers and being rescued over-and-over by a sole-surviving warrior from one of her father/king's tribes. It all wraps up very quickly in the end. If you like Frazzetta, then you'll notice this is a whole movie of his paintings in rotoscoped animation.

4 out of 5 stars Action Packed Fantasy Fun!.......2007-01-03

If you liked Conan the Barbarian or even Thundarr the Barbarian you'll like this movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites. A real gem of a film........2006-12-01

I highly recommend this title to anyone who likes films in the fantasy genre. Even after all these years I still enjoy watching this film for what could probably be the 100th time. The animation techniques were very innovative for the time. The storyline is compelling and the characters are fascinating. This is one DVD that I am very happy to have been able to get my hands on and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and special.

5 out of 5 stars Frazetta animated, 'nuff said!.......2006-11-22

He is awesome. Anyone who dobuts the Rotoscope, see this movie.

Know what's cooler? If you are an illustrator/animator, you could do that movie today? (Hopefully something original along those lines)

Just get Poser 5 or higher, a good animation software package (ToonBoom seems to be leading) and work out a storyboard. Then, have the 3D figs act out the basic moves and trace over them, using the computer to extend your art style.

A literal "Animated Movie" would still be a labor of Hercules, but 3-10 minute shorts would be quite doable;-)

The latest in an animated Christian children's series, this video teaches kids the importance of standing up to peer pressure through a thinly disguised Bible story. When Bob the Tomato, our host, sees that Larry the Cucumber is trying to fit into what's "cool" by wearing an oven mitt as a hat, he tells Larry that it's important to be true to yourself no matter what the consequences. Bob tells Larry a story about three vegetables, Rag, Shack, and Benny, who are held hostage in a factory and forced to make chocolate bunnies. When the owner, Mr. Nezzar, takes a liking to them, he offers to promote them if they will only worship a giant chocolate bunny.

The story is based on the book of Daniel in the Old Testament, in which three friends stand up to King Nebuchadnezzar, refusing to worship a false idol. The slavery and death themes may be too dark for kids under 7, but the animation and songs are fun. --Elisabeth Keating

This is wonderful AND powerful to watch the Bible come to life this way. You will laugh AND get ministered to. Simple ideas brought to life.

3 out of 5 stars Not suitable for younger children.......2007-06-18

We own several Veggie Tales that our children really enjoy. But this particular one is not suitable for small children at all. We thoroughly read the description and reviews for Rack, Shack & Benny and felt comfortable ordering it, but it turned out to be frightening to our young children (Rack, Shack & Benny were threatened to be thrown into a firey furnace if they didn't sing the bunny song). A warning was added to the description after we purchased it.

4 out of 5 stars A Veggie Classic.......2005-07-15

I thoroughly enjoyed this VeggieTales movie and can understand why it is a favorite for some of my Veggie-loving friends. The plot was good, the characters were lovable (except for Nezzer who of course isn't generally liked, though his singing is fun to imitate). I saw the video version, so I'm not aware of this line-changing business but it does seem kind of sad. I liked the story, liked the characters, liked the silly song too (Larry doing folk dance in spanish is pretty laughable). Highly recommended to any VeggieTales fan that hasn't seen it yet, and actually for those who have. It's one that you can rewatch again and again and still enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Main theme in show: Stand up for what you believe in.......2005-06-25

This veggie tales episode is a good one to show children in order to teach them to shand up for what they believe in no matter what (even if they feel pressure from their peers). It also shows the importance of obeying their parents even when their parents aren't around.

It also comes with a silly song about a dancing and singing cucumber (which may be funny to some people but others might find it a bit rude).

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing after Wiggle Time.......2007-08-07

We received Wiggle Time as a gift, we'd never seen the Wiggles before, and my daughter loves it! So I wanted to get her another dvd to give the other a little rest. She watches it but it doesn't have the fun dances that Wiggle Time has. It is so sweet to see her get excited and learn the dance moves, & that isn't happening with this particular dvd. And the Spanish songs are pretty bad. I preferred the more "boring" sets and the little kids dancing to this jazzed up stuff with adult dancers.

5 out of 5 stars Take a Ride in a Brand New Wiggly Way.......2007-06-13

For the first time ever, the Wiggles have more than just the Big Red Car... they also have a Big Red Boat. This time, Anthony is doing the driving instead of Greg-only in one of the bonus features' storybook.

I'm getting used to singing some of the old songs in english while the animated Mariachi Wiggles sang them in spanish. There's a special Wigglehouse scene that I know very well from Playhouse Disney.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed with 1st Wiggles Purchase.......2007-02-24

We don't have cable, so my daughter isn't exposed to the Wiggles on TV. She has been enamored with previews of other wiggles videos, and I actually enjoyed them myself.

This video seems like a random selection, and I was very disappointed in the lack of choreography on the part of the wiggles themselves. The educational value was also disappointing, as I expected more from someone who majored in education in college. Learning can be fun, I'm just not sure how much my daughter will actually learn from this series of random songs.

We have watched the first 20 minutes of this, and that's about all I could take. My sister in law warned me, suggested I choose Little Einsteins or Blue's Clues... I should have listened to her.

My 16 month old daughter does seem to enjoy the video, so I will probably let her watch it while I'm in the shower and she is in her pack and play.

Perhaps I am being overly critical, as a first time Mom. I am not sure whether I should be glad or worried that my daughter actually seems to like it.

2 out of 5 stars Same Old Songs.......2006-08-26

I agree with the other two reviewers that the Wiggles really need some fresh material! This is completely recycled songs just sung in front of a different set. And yes, there are 3 or 4 songs sung in spanish that my kids were completely disinterested in. We love the Wiggles, have seen them in concert twice and have a lot of their DVD's. But, this one really bores.

Please guys, get us some new stuff!

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still entertaining..........2006-08-18

This one isn't our favorite, but still worth buying for a devoted Wiggles fan.

In The Big White, a failing Alaskan travel agent hopes he's found the answer to his problems when a couple of thugs leave a dead body in a dumpster outside his business. The lack of a body has prevented Paul Barnell (Robin Williams, The Birdcage, One Hour Photo) from claiming his missing brother's life insurance. Unfortunately, the thugs who dumped the body in the first place (Tim Blake Nelson, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and W. Earl Brown, Deadwood) want it back, so they kidnap Barnell's wife (Holly Hunter, Raising Arizona), who may or may not have Tourette's Syndrome. Meanwhile, an obsessive insurance agent (Giovanni Ribisi, Saving Private Ryan) smells something fishy and thinks he's found the case that will get him and his phone psychic girlfriend (Alison Lohman, White Oleander) transferred to warmer climes, and Barnell's long-missing brother (Woody Harrelson, White Men Can't Jump) returns, a bit perturbed to learn he's dead. The Big White suffers from an overload of quirkiness--phone psychics, Tourette's, and possibly gay hit men are a lot of whimsy for one movie--but the actors commit themselves to their roles with gusto. The movie misses the bullseye that Fargo hit, but fans of macabre comedy may enjoy The Big White. --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Check Out "The Big Empty" Instead.......2007-09-11

I don't need much of a budget to write a review of a film, only a little bit of my time for watching and writing. That said, I'm confident that if I had "The Big White's" $16 Million budget, indie director's dream cast, and lame "Fargo" inspired script; I could have made a better and more entertaining film. My first move would have been to throw some of the budget into a major script re-write, maybe just sending the thing off to the Coen brothers themselves for a quick IQ transfusion.

The "Fargo" rip-off comparisons are valid, but that does not mean that there is much about "The Big White" with which "Fargo" fans will connect. The similarities are pretty much confined to setting (Alaska instead of Minnesota), production design (white), and basic plot elements (two bumbling hoods, financially desperate businessman, kidnapped and bound wife), and a side story featuring an odd domestic couple (an insurance investigator instead of a female sheriff).

The "Fargo" disconnects are more subtle. Instead of a crime thriller with black comedy elements, "The Big White" is a black comedy with crime thriller elements. Which would not be a problem except that "Fargo's" occasional ironic comical moments have several times more amusement value than "The Big White's" frenzied efforts to inject some humor.

Secondly, on its most fundamental level "The Big White" is mean spirited. While "Fargo" parodied the great white north culture of Minnesota, the characters themselves were comfortable inhabitants of their strange white world; they had grown up there and were well suited to their environment. In "The Big White", the conflict and the character motivations stem from a desire to escape from a remote Alaskan town that seemingly has no virtues.

In The Big White, a failing Alaskan travel agency owner (Robin Williams playing his Jack Dundee character from "The Best of Times-1986) schemes to collect on his missing brother's life insurance policy by claiming that a dead body in finds in a dumpster is that of his brother. Things become complicated when two bumbling (possibly gay) hoods (Tim Blake Nelson and W. Earl Brown) kidnap his wife (Holly Hunter) because they need the body to prove that they have carried out a contract killing. Hunter's character may or may not have Tourette's Syndrome, a psychological condition which may or may not have comic potential in a feature film. But we will have to wait for a better script and a better to director to find out because the results are inconclusive here.

The main side story involves an obsessive insurance investigator (Giovanni Ribisi) and his air- headed telephone psychic girlfriend (Alison Lohman). Their scenes together provide the film's best moments and the only times when it manages to duplicate "Fargo's" almost poetic humor. Ribisi is solid in all his scenes and you wish a bigger part for Lohman.

If you like small off-kilter films (with big name actors having fun with their performances) you would be far better served by "Dummy" (2002) and "The Big Empty" (2003). "The Big White" tries for the feel of these two films but falls short.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent film marred by ridiculous ending........2007-08-09

This film is a Coen Brothers wannabe. Quirky characters abound, and there are two dead bodies. The characters and the plot are very interesting, especially with heavy hitters like Robin Williams, Holly Hunter, and Woody Harrelson.

The climactic scene ties up all the loose ends in a neat and tidy package, but I found the staging quite artificial and contrived, for which I am docking the movie's rating. A man passes a dead body he finds in a dumpster off as his brother, who has been missing for 5 years, in order to collect on his brother's life insurance policy. Meanwhile, the two-bit hoods who killed the guy need a body to prove they carried out their assigned hit so they kidnap the man's wife and set up and exchange; his wife for the body. Once they complete the exchange, everyone just stands around waiting, and this was the part I found very contrived. No one would be hanging around after they did such an exchange. I don't appreciate movies in which the characters do stupid things that no reasonable person would do.

Worth watching despite the ending.

5 out of 5 stars Very unique movie!.......2007-07-23

Robin Williams and Holly Hunter are always great, but the supporting parts make the movie. Very intriguing and surprising story line. Not for young children.

4 out of 5 stars black and white .......2007-01-12

the big white is a black comedy shot in a white setting....just like life.

This genre is one of my favorites and in spite of it's flaws this film does not disappoint.
Other reviewers have written of the plot and summarized the story but I don't think they give the dialogue the credit it deserves nor the commentary on topics such as love, psychics, syndromes, relationships etc.
Sure there were flaws and the ending was a bit corny but with all the laugh out loud moments it was worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Great Performances In A Picture That Tries Really, Really, Really Hard To Be Both Outrageous And Lovable.......2006-12-28

Mark Mylod's largest film to date has been "Ali G Indahouse," a sporadically funny (but often silly) Sasha Baron Cohen character picture. For those now on a "Borat" high, you might want to catch up on another Cohen creation. Ali G can be an amusing hip-hop poser, but the film done as a conventional narrative lacks much of "Borat"'s imagination or ingenuity. So, several years later, it's impressive that he has aligned a cast of such magnitude as was assembled for the black comedy "The Big White." We've got Robin Williams, Holly Hunter, Woody Harrelson, Tim Blake Nelson, Giovanni Ribisi, and Alison Lohman in a comedy of murder, kidnapping, insurance fraud, phone psychics, and mental illness. Set in a small Alaskan hamlet, many people would like to compare this film to "Fargo." While the film shares some of the same comic sensibilities and a similar wintry locale, it's kind of like comparing "Casablanca" to "Pretty Woman." Both films may have a certain appeal, but they are definitely in different leagues.

Williams plays a down-on-his-luck travel agent with financial difficulties and a wife with Tourette's (Hunter). Needing cash, he tries to collect on his missing brother's insurance policy. Ribisi, as the insurance investigator, informs him that his brother has not been missing long enough to be considered legally dead and there's nothing that can be done. In a coincidence, a couple of amateur hitmen dump a body in the dumpster outside Williams' agency. Williams, on discovering the corpse, masterminds a plot to get his brother declared dead. The hitmen, then, are ordered to retrieve the body (which is now missing) and all types of mayhem ensues.

I will say that "The Big White" has a lot going for it, and I can imagine some people really enjoying it. For myself, however, the picture was always trying too hard to be outrageous--it's not grounded in the reality, heart, and subtlety that accompanied "Fargo." Yet it isn't played as an outright comedy either, it does expect you to care about the characters (which I really didn't, except as a mild diversion). I give all the actors credit for giving robust and committed performances. While not a huge Ribisi fan, I actually thought this was one of his better performances. And Tim Blake Nelson, as one of the hitmen, continues to be an underrated presence in any movie. A few words for Holly Hunter, whom I miss as a major actress. She is appealing, as always, in a cringeworthy conception--the Tourette's as a "cute" disease syndrome.

There are plenty of funny bits, some macabre humor--but there is so much going on (there's another story involving Ribisi's home life, and then there's Harrelson), the picture always felt slightly off balance. I certainly didn't regret watching "The Big White," it just never engaged me the way I wanted it too. A mild recommendation (especially if you like the actors), it might be a slight and enjoyable romp for you. About 3 1/2 stars. KGHarris, 12/06.

4 out of 5 stars knuckleheads-the war is over!.......2007-08-08

This film must have had a touch of de ja vu for Randolph Scott. As in his 1940 "Virginia City", he is in charge of a stolen Yankee gold shipment in Nevada, meant to help the Confederacy prolong the War. In both cases, this operation occurred just before or just after the War was over. Thus, the question is:What should be done with the gold? They couldn't just give it back to Federal authorities, as they had killed 7 soldiers in stealing it, even if they believed they were acting on behalf of their government. Most of the film involves fending off bandits who know for sure what to do with the gold. In the end, it's not clear(to me) the eventual fate of the gold. Perhaps a fate basically similar to that of the gold in "Virginia City"? More likely, the remaining hostages(now their declared friends!), returned it to Federal authorities, explaining that the theives had all been killed in a shootout with another bandit gang or by themselves(not true)... A good action western. The plot is not complicated, but the basic situation is, especially for the ex-Confederates and their hostages.

Special footnote, George Randolph Scott better known as Randolph Scott, was an American film actor whose career spanned the sound era from the late 1920s to the early 1960s ... his popularity grew in the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in such films as "Gung Ho"! 5 out of 5 stars A top-notch Randolph Scott western with an explosive start .......2007-01-07

Between 1951 and 1954 the prolific Randolph Scott completed six westerns for Hungarian director Andre de Toth in between times he still found time to make a couple more westerns most notable of which was the highly rated and commercially successful HANGMAN'S KNOT (1952) A Scott-Brown Production for Columbia Pictures. Written and Directed by Roy Huggins. This was Huggins only film as director. Later he moved into television and had such series as MAVERICK and THE ROCKFORD FILES to his credit.

The story is of a small band of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart (Randolph Scott) who following an attack a Union gold shipment discover from a Union soldier survivor that the war has been over a month. Lee Marvin plays one of the soldiers in his first of several films with Scott; another of the soldiers is young Claude Jarman Jr. Most of the action takes place in the Sierra Stage Line Way Station, where the soldiers are pinned down along with the stagecoach passengers and station keepers by a renegade band posing as the lawmen led by Quincy (Ray Teal) who were after the gold. Among the passengers are former Union army nurse (Donna Reed) and her no-good fiancée (Richard Denning). The tension rises as the advantage shifts from one side to the other before the leading up the eventual final showdown. A credit to all concerned with high production values throughout.

Hopefully Columbia will digitally re-master other fifty-odd year-old Randolph Scott Westerns like the wonderful RIDE LONESOME (1959) and his penultimate film COMANCHE STATION (1960) they deserve the best of treatment and care for future generations to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Scott! Great Western!.......2004-06-28

This is the stuff that Columbia/Tristar should be releasing on disc
not another deluxe, special edition of "Spiderman" Randolph Scott is
in top form as the leader of a band of rebel confederates who after
Robbing a Union Convoy & killing all on board they come to find out
that the civil war has ended over a month ago. Faced with choice of
being executed or fleeing for home. As men option the latter only
a posse of bounty hunters ruin the groups chances as
they are forced to take hostages and hold up in a stagecoach shack.

One of the best in a series of good westerns made by Randolph
Scott in the 1950's This one sports a great plot with a good cast
of characters including Donna Reed,Richard Denning and Lee Marvin
The remaster quality is excellent(almost blinding) in it's bright
technicolor glory. Come on Columbia get the lead out of that film
vault and release "The Bounty Hunter" and "Commanche Station"!

Product Description

This is a great Canadian comedy series. The movie tells of how the stars Jean Paul Tremblay-(Julian) and the head writer of the show and his buddies Rickie and Bubbles play it over the top in what is a true life satirical look at trailer parks and the denizens of said trashy hoods. The movie will tell you why Rickie and Julian begin doing their more advanced forays into the world of crime. WHY and the reasons behind everything would be a spoiler so I shall not give the real reasons behind their more brilliant escapades. Their friend and oft-time partner(Bubbles) is a brilliant character. The whole show is brilliant and missing the movie will not affect the way you see the sit-com one bit. It is a comedy with a capital C and a brilliant satire on trailer park living and small time crooks with small time ideas but big time dreams. If you ever have the opportunity to watch--buy--steal this program grab it. You will be glad you did. And to my American friends---It will break you up also. 10 out of 9. Brilliant. TV how TV should be.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest thing on TV.......2006-05-21

Hey I am just doing this review while hunting for Season 5 - once you see the show - you'll be jonesing for more too! Original, just too funny, this TV show rocks out. Although this is truly a Eastern Canadian show, those of us who grew up in 1970s can deeply relate to it. I see it more as a Gen X/Y style humor for all nations.

5 out of 5 stars !!! CANADIAN? WHO WATCHES AMERICAN ANYWAY? !!!.......2005-06-05

BEING A CANADAIN, THIS SHOW IS THE ONLY THING KEEPING T.V REAL. I SICK OF STUPID AMERICAN SHOWS ON THE AIR ALL THE TIME. EVERY AMERICAN SHOW IS A REDUNDANT STICOM/REALITY SHOW THAT IS ONLY GOOD TO FEED THE MINDS OF A MINDLESS NATION (LOOK AT THE PRESIDENT) TRAILER PARK BOYS IS THE ONLY GOOD SHOW ON THE AIR TODAY, GREAT WRITING, GREAT CHARACTERS, AND OF COURSE, ITS CANADIAN, WHICH HELPS ALOT. THE BEST SHOW ON T.V SINCE KIDS IN THE HALL. IM HAPPY TO LIVE IN A COUNTRY THAT STILL HAS ORIGIONALITY AND A SENSE OF HUMOR, AND IF YOU WANT TO CHECK IT OUT, GUARANTEED YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH TRAILER LIFE!

5 out of 5 stars Canadians have TV, Who knew?.......2005-05-07

In the states we don't ever hear much about Canadian television... Probably because most of the stuff they watch is produced by or for Americans... Anyway, this little jewel caught my eye and had me rolling in laughter. Probably one of the funniest sit-coms I've ever seen. Buy it, roll a fatty, and sit back and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Canadian Comedy.......2004-10-08

Trailer Park Boys is unmatchable. The characters Ricky, Julian, & Bubbles are very well developed. Ricky is a great guy, but is just confused at times. In his confusion, he just happens to bring him and everyone around him down. Julian, usually the problem solver, like many people is always frustrated by Ricky's actions. Bubbles, the COOLEST character, fixes shopping carts for a living.

If you haven't seen season 1 & 2, then get them first.
