Homelessness is a serious problem, but this film by Mark Rocco made it look like an alternative lifestyle that, if not for drugs and prostitution, would be kind of cool. Set in Los Angeles, the film centers on a group of homeless teens led by King (Dermot Mulroney), who tries to look out for his younger charges. But he can't keep some of them from getting involved in drug dealing, which leads to violence and melodrama involving evil drug dealer Kyle MacLachlan. Mulroney has a poignant quality, as does Lara Flynn Boyle as a runaway girl he falls for. On the other hand, Sean Astin is stereotypical as a strung-out kid who spoils everything. That's Will "Fresh Prince" Smith as a legless kid in a couple of scenes. --Marshall FineCustomer Reviews:

Homelessness Hollywood style..........2004-03-22
I lived in Seattle for a while and the young people living on the street have a certain belief in the 'coolness' of their lifestyle that actually validates this movie to a degree.
Having worked with the homeless in my hometown, I've learned that it is not monolithic. There are as many 'types' of homeless people as there are homeless people. Does that make me an expert? No.
However, that being said, this is an excellent movie. The cast is phenomenal. With a score by Melissa Etheridge, the movie feels in places like a rock video but it also helps with the flow and mood.
The movie does a good job of exposing, to a greater or lesser degree, the problems that leads to and come with being on the street. It ain't pretty and the movie never really leads you to that conclusion. While it certainly isn't graphic in an extreme sense, it does give you just enough to feel.

Too Short!.......2004-02-12
I was disappointed because the DVD is too short. MTV records the cast 24/7 so you'd think there would be more footage to share on this DVD. Not so.
However, what little there is is entertaining.

Product Description
Length: 30 min. Performance rights and Discussion Guide included. (Gr. 6-12, College) Its true: What you dont know CAN hurt you! So In the Mix takes a hard look at drinking with hard facts. We meet some teens who are recovering alcoholics and a boy who paid a high price for drinking and driving: he was left partially brain damaged from an accident. In a powerful segment, two 21 year-olds test the real physical effects of alcohol on the body as they drink and drive under supervision of the police and a doctor. They dispel myths about alcohol and ways to sober up. In other segments we take a look at a high school program in which upperclassmen hold workshops on drinking for younger students; and we see what really goes on at a police sobriety checkpoint. "I saw the Alcohol show and it changed my outlook on drinking. I never knew it was that dangerous. Thank you so much for that show, it really made me think." -Meredith Foss, student.
