5 out of 5 stars FYI: ASPECT RATIO.......2006-09-22

. . . I have just begun to view this series via NETFLIX, and if the first disc is indicitive of the rest of the series then this is something i will be sure to purchase. As i cannot honestly review the series in it's entirety, this "review" is to make clear that despite any misprint here on amazon or on the packaging -(don't have the box so i can't say)- this series IS in full 16X9 anamorphic widescreen - it does state as much on the discs themselves. many people, like myself, will not buy/rent dvds if the aspect ratio is not preserved on disc. For those concered; have no fear, it's in gorgeous widescreen. 5-stars for disc 1 and the beautiful transfer

4 out of 5 stars National Geographic "Africa" Series.......2005-10-30

Beautifully photographed. However, if you're interested in Africa from a political and historical standpoint, as I am, this is not really the video series for you.

Excellent wildlife and nature footage (just as you'd expect from National Geographic) and even an attempt to convey some sociological lessons about "urban" vs. "tribal" differences.

Overall, well worth watching, but don't look to it for very deep historical or political enlightenment about the continent.

5 out of 5 stars National Geographic Africa.......2005-08-10

To know a country is to know its people. Previously apart from South Africa, Africa was a homongenous blur to me. This series looks at the different regions of the continent through the eyes of the people who live out their lives there. It contrasts the traditional ways with the ways of change giving both a glimpse into the past and into the future. The flora and forna also feature but are featured more to show the struggle to survive in different habitats and a changing world.

5 out of 5 stars Africa made accessible.......2004-08-23

Irresistible vignettes depict real Africans carrying out their life journeys presented in an intimate and compelling fashion. Eight stories (2 per disk) from divergent geographic and cultural settings illuminate the breadth and diversity of people who call this continent home.

I teach world history to students whose world view will be forever changed as a result of seeing these educational works of insight and beauty.

Description

Long a symbol of love, affection and faithfulness, the diamond is now increasingly linked with war, blood and brutality. In the diamond-rich West African nation of Sierra Leone, rebels used the precious gems to bankroll a violent ten-year insurrection, leaving a terrorized population and a ravaged landscape in its wake. National Geographic correspondents follow the trail of illicit diamonds from their origin in the muddy pits of impoverished Sierra Leone, to the pristine cobblestone streets of Antwerp, Belgium, to their final stop in the glittering display cases of New York's finest jewelry stores.

3 out of 5 stars A(nother) Tragedy in Africa.......2007-08-29

Let me admit that I have not seen DiCaprio's film "Blood Diamond." Like many documentaries produced after films, I think this one was intended for people who want to learn more facts after seeing a fictional portrayal.

The point of this work is to show that even if the diamond industry wants to ban illegal "blood" diamonds, it would be difficult to do. Like Latin American farmers who say they wouldn't grow you-know-what if they could make a livable wage off of legal plants, this work shows West Africans mining for diamonds because they are given no other alternatives. Seeing lush African land all dug up and made brown due to diamond searching reminded me of the problem of destruction of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The work shows that African countries get little money for their huge diamonds and that few in the industry pay taxes on their profits.

In the same way that the 1980s film "Cry Freedom" problematically centered upon Kevin Kline's character rather than Steven Biko, this work seems to focus on a journalist born in Kenya, but clearly not of African ancestry. The audience is intended to walk in his shoes and the format may be more viewer-friendly, still I wonder if it problematically decentered Africans. I wonder how this would be different if Cornel West, Ellis Cose, or even Iman had narrated the work.

In a late 1980s song "Mountains," Prince sang, "Africa divided/Conflict in the air/It's enough to make you want to lose your mind!" This was very disturbing for me to watch as an African American. The continent doesn't just have AIDS, malaria, and genocide to deal with, but this diamond mess too! I offer much love and sympathy to the Motherland and I imagine that other people of African descent will feel the same way after seeing this.

One African interviewee said, "Without love, a diamond is just a pebble." He meant that the object is still important and that he would like people to continue to buy diamonds from poor West Africans. However, this documentary put a bad taste in my mouth. I don't have the money for diamonds, but I wouldn't want to buy one if that means a little African child will get her or his arm chopped off or if an African man will die trying to find that "pebble." I'd rather give stock to a loved one if this is happening with diamonds. I'm not sure if I will even enjoy the Herb Alpert song featuring Janet Jackson called "Diamonds" anymore.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fun and educational.......2006-09-29

My 3-yr old son loves this DVD for its catchy songs and lively footage. He watched it every day for the first couple of weeks, and still requests it regularly a year later, so the whole family has got most of the songs memorized. I like that the DVD shows some footage from the wet season in Africa, not just the dusty dry season that you usually see. And they talk about predators and prey in a kid-friendly way, exciting but not scary. We also like the "Hanging with the Primates" show that comes as a special feature, and the interactive quiz and animal sounds features. It's a very polished, engaging DVD that our whole family enjoys.

3 out of 5 stars Boring for my 2-year-old.......2006-07-05

My 2-year-old animal junkie son got bored about 20 minutes into this and started asking for "Elmo's World." Some of the footage is pretty old, and it doesn't have the same polish as the Baby Einstein dvds he's used to.

      Product Description

Lions, Cheetahs and Leopards each has developed its own hunting strategies, family upbringing and survival techniques, and we examine their behavior and competitive interaction with each other to find out who is the ultimate hunter. The cheetah is the master of the open plains, typically out-sprinting small antelope at speeds of 112kmph. But their small size often results in them losing their kill to heavier competitors. Leopards stalk their prey, and launch powerful ambushes, before retreating to a lofty tree with their catch. They know that on ground, they are vulnerable against the other great African predator - the lion. Lions have the advantage as they have evolved as social animals that work as a pride to combine their strength and bring down the largest of prey, while being able to ward off competition. This is a fascinating insight into three great African predators, and their relationship with each other, and the rest of the African fauna. Their remarkable hunting strategies ensure their survival, but in the Mala Mala, South Africa, which will win the Big Cat challenge?

3 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2006-11-08

This video offers decent footage and average commentary for a nature documentary. The best aspect is the price. For $2, it is worth it. The video does a good job of showing how the niches of leopards, lions, and cheetahs are different. The strengths and weaknesses of these animals are explored. Occasional shots of other animals, but mostly it is the three featured cats.
