Description

When the hated Taliban were ousted, Afghan women felt their daily nightmare was over. They hoped to reclaim the future for their daughters despite isolation at the hands of the international community. But generations of neglect and second-class status don't vanish with the current political winds. Journalist Sally Armstrong exposes the ongoing struggles of women in modern Afghanistan by following the lives of five courageous women from diverse backgrounds: Dr. Sima Simar, a woman who ignored death threats and defied edicts of the Taliban by providing healthcare and education to women, and became briefly, Deputy Prime Minister in the transitional government; Soghra, who lost everything to the Taliban, now struggling to feed and clothe her five children; Hamida, a school principal determined to provide education to her female students; Camellah, an Afghan housewife living in a country whose laws make her a virtual sex slave to her husband; and Lima, a young girl whose childhood has been lost to war.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars nice documentary showing afghanistans sufferation.......2005-03-08

anyone should view this who is interested in the current political situation in afghanistan as well as the sufferation there, particularly of women. there is a book that goes along the same lines as this dvd by sally armstrong. she is a canadian who became interested and began advocating for the womens rights in afghanistan, and she has captured very well the situation as it really is. even in the removal of the taliban and the so-called liberation of women due to this, many people are still suffering, the burka is still being worn out of fear and tauting from men who disagree with any outside forces initiating changes in the country. follow the heartbreaking stories of women in afghanistan through the various personal stories that armstrong has covered in this documentary, and see for yourself the magnitude of the situation and the courage and strength of the woman to survive. the struggle continues on, and hopefully one day the people of afghanistan can find a peace and freedom they havent had.
