The tragedy of the Titanic has fascinated all since she sank with 1,500 of her passengers and crew in 1912. Much later, scientist Robert Ballard set out to find and explore the wreck, despite difficulties of depth and location. Using the research submarine Alvin and a remote-controlled underwater robot, he was the first human in over 70 years to see the giant resting beneath the North Atlantic waves. Secrets of the Titanic tells the story of the events leading up to the sinking using footage and photographs from the doomed maiden voyage and then follows the luckier Dr. Ballard through the steps leading to his discovery. As usual for National Geographic, the photography is excellent, even within the cramped confines of the tiny Alvin. The first views of the Titanic's interior are truly spectacular, especially when contrasted with vintage photos, and the excitement of Ballard and his crew is contagious. The spirit and joys of discovery are well captured and the viewer is reminded that the world is still teeming with opportunities for adventure. --Rob Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Titanic documentary is good.......2007-08-14

This documentary starts at the time when the titanic was being built in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Then it goes to the luxury of the Titanic, sea trails then her maiden voyage to New York City, and the sinking. Then the documentary shows the camera when the time Titanic was discovered on September 1 1985. After that scene of the documentary DR.Robert Ballard gets to explore the Titanic wreck in tiny submersible, and he uses underwater robot called Jason Juinor or JJ.Then it shows the day April 15 when the Cunard Liner Carpathia rescues the survivors of the disaster, then goes to New York. After that it shows newpapers all over the globe especially in London,Liverpool, and New York where people gather offices of White Star Line to see if there loved ones survived or not. Then DR.Robert Ballard prepares for anoter dive to Titanic but this dive was abandoned because alvin-the submersible battery was leaking. Then later talks to the men about tomorrows dive with his little titanic model. In the documentary,a scene called TITANIC REVEALED the narrator Martin Sheen tells about that the Titanic is no longer lost,no longer legend, there are survivors and people abord the UNSINKABLE great ship once again after 74 dark, quiet, silent years. Then alvin comes close to the crows nest where one of the lookouts spots an iceberg then reports to the bridge. From the bridge engines where signaled FULL ASTERN,and the wheel hard-a-starboard.Then at the end of the documentary shows that 1500 people where soon going to die,at the end DR.Robert Ballard leaves behind memorial plaque to honor for those died on that night.

4 out of 5 stars Worth viewing.......2007-07-20

A good update on Bob Ballard's quest to find the Titanic. The Titanic Exhibit is currently in our city and this, coupled with other Titanic videos and books have helped learning about the whole story.

Whether you see the exhibit or not, if you are interested in the Titanic, this is an important part of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Secrets Review.......2007-05-12

This is one of the cornerstone movies for Titanic "buffs." Although it doesn't get into depth about the hows and whys and the different theories surrounding the sinking of the ill-fated liner, there is a strong emphasis on deep-sea exploration. A lot of good footage of the ship is there too, but remember, it was filmed in 1986, so it's not HD. :)

Great for the classroom.

Talk about finding a needle in a haystack! Like a real-life detective story. This documentary is like being there during a historic moment.
