Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. The tapes give a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars About everything you'll ever know!.......2007-09-10

I've been a fan and follower since I was eight years old (and that was a LONG time ago)! I've read and watched several books and videos on the band over the years but I heard and saw things in the Anthology that I've never read, heard, or saw before.
Whether you're a young fan who has discovered their music through your parents...or grandparents; or you've been a long, long time fan of the greatest rock & roll band, you'll find this series very entertaining and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars My Beatles Collection is Complete.......2007-07-20

I recently obtained a Fathers Day gift from my son,The Beatles Anthology 5 DVD set. What a SUPER find. I have viewed the DVD set 3 times since purchase...an excellent product. I am very pleased with the purchase and effecient transaction.

5 out of 5 stars Beatlemania Revisited.......2007-07-09

Filled with amazing footage, this is the definite collection for Beatle fans everywhere. More than just nostalgia, this is music history very well choreographed. Each DVD is filled with interviews, concert performances and personal insights. It is great to relive this time and place once again. Also amazing is to realize just how much influence the Beatles really created then and even now. The DVD's do a great job in re-creating that era's zeitgeist(spirit of the age).

Just some things to note. This is not an album DVD. So if you're looking to buy a music DVD expect to be disappointed. The late John Lennon is voiced and videoed in from early recordings. His views and opinions can naturally only go so far. Imagine what it would have been like to have John, Paul, George and Ringo sitting around the table reminiscing about the good-old-days or even one last jam session.

Wonderful collection filled with great memories.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Investment.......2007-06-27

I love, love the Beatles, and this DVD set is awesome. I bought it as a gift for my sister, but I watch it too.

5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!.......2007-05-22

People, please. What could be more entertaining than hours upon hours of the Beatles telling their story? I have watched this many times, and never tire of it. If you are a fan, you are missing out if you don't see this. And the bonus material is great too - Paul George and Ringo jamming and reminscing - wow!

Description

This documentary is a close examination into what some consider to be a "hoax": aspartame toxicity. This documentary attempts to look at what is definitively known about aspartame and discovers that the label "hoax" in this case is a dangerous misconception. This controversial documentary is sure to open eyes to the possible dangers of what lurks in our food.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-08-06

I was a big diet coke drinker until I saw this documentary! They do a very thorough job of uncovering the timeline and key people involved in the FDA's approval of aspartame... can you believe that Donald Rumsfeld was the president of the company that manufactures asparatame when it finally got FDA approval!!! Lots of political information and background. I highly recommend this!!!

5 out of 5 stars a must see.......2007-07-31

Now I can show people what I have been trying to explain for decades. The poisons added to our food is a disgrace. We are slowly being killed in the name of profit. Anyone suffering from illness or disease should view this movie and learn how to rid their bodies of harmful chemicals and begin the road to good health.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-05-07

A comprehensive and thoroughly damning expose of FDA complicity in marketing a known toxic substance to an unsuspecting public.

4 out of 5 stars An engaging video.......2007-04-20

It's a very interesting video which explained the facts behind aspartamine in an easy to understand manner.

I was a little disappointed it didn't go into the chemical composition very much... as that's central to understanding the problem... but if you know the hazards of methanol you will appreciate the toxic effects of this substance.

A few illustrations of methanol poisoning from news reports wouldn't have gone astray... as most people aren't familiar with it's effects.

It took me two goes before it all really clicked (it's almost beyond belief in places).

Despite this the message is clear... the message is compelling... and shocking.

It puts a new light on the political machinations that are driving organisations like the FDA. It also puts a new light on a few politicians which you might have thought of as relatively spotless. Ouch!!!

If you've got friends who use artificial sweetners... get them to start using something safer. This video should do the trick.

:-)

5 out of 5 stars The bitter truth about an artificial sweetener.......2007-03-29

Just over a year ago, I became a statistic when I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. After moving past that initial shock, it occurred to me that I could still enjoy many items because of the convenience of the `artificial sweetener' Aspartame. I took it on faith that it was tested and deemed safe by the FDA so I frequently used products that contained it. After watching Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World and realizing that I'm naïve, I should have done my homework and found out just what it was that I'd been ingesting. Needless to say, I will never again eat or drink anything containing Aspartame.

What is Aspartame exactly? Apart from it being called an artificial sweetener I mean? Well, in a word, it's poison. That may sound a little extreme but when you analyze the known information, there really is no other way to categorize it. Let's take a look.

Aspartame is broken down into 3 parts which consist of Phenylalanine, Aspartic Acid, and Methyl Ester. When swallowed, Methyl Ester immediately turns into Methyl Alcohol (a.k.a. Methanol, a.k.a. Wood Alcohol). This substance is very poisonous to the human body. Aspartame has been linked to 92 different medical symptoms, some of which are also associated with Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Lupus, and Fibromyalgia. A predominant number of these symptoms are neurological problems. After discontinuing use of Aspartame laden products, individuals 'detoxifying' themselves have felt their adverse reactions decrease and show a marked improvement in health. This is strong circumstantial evidence lending credence to the fact that Aspartame is poisonous to the body. Common sense states that not everyone will have the same acute reactions to Aspartame toxicity. Information in the documentary shows that those who consumed large quantities of products containing Aspartame were showing severe symptoms sooner rather than later. Others who use these products less frequently are probably setting themselves up for health problems in their future.

In the late 1970's, the maker of Aspartame, G.D. Searle, attempted to get it approved for public consumption. Initial tests were not favorable due to health hazards created by the substance (when tested on lab animals, brain tumors didn't prove to be very popular). This didn't fit the agenda for G.D. Searle so they decided to put the ethics aside. Upon later investigation, just some of the following information was discovered: improper lab testing, fabricated test results, destruction of medical evidence showing toxicity, tampering with medical records and scientific data, and critical study documentation purposefully withheld from the FDA.

In 1980, a public board of inquiry voted unanimously to reject the use of Aspartame for public use until more tests were conducted. Once again, this was unacceptable to the G.D. Searle Company. By way of unethical political maneuvering and a total lack of professional behavior, the FDA, the government, and G.D. Searle completely disregarded public safety and got Aspartame approved for public consumption. And this was after 3 senior scientists from the FDA pleaded with the `powers that be' not to release this product. Unbelievable but true. This entire ordeal is explained in detail in Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World and it's downright appalling. In 1983, now being approved, Aspartame was finally unleashed on the unsuspecting public for the first time. Only 6 months after Aspartame hit the streets, so to speak, the following health statistics were noticed: brain tumors were up by 10%, Diabetes was up by 30%, and brain lymphoma (a very aggressive type of brain tumor) was up by 60%. To add insult to injury, in 1988, of all the food additive complaints reported to the FDA, 80% of these concerned Aspartame.

To get an idea of how prevalent Aspartame is, it can be found in these following products (just to name a few):

Soft drinks, vitamin & herb supplements, yogurt, instant breakfasts, candy, breath mints, cereals, sugar-free chewing gum, cocoa mixes, coffee beverages, instant breakfasts, gelatin desserts, frozen desserts, juice beverages, laxatives, milk drinks, shake mixes, tabletop sweeteners (NutraSweet & Equal), tea beverages, instant teas and coffees, topping mixes, wine coolers.

Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World is a very straightforward documentary and while the material presented is highly informative and absolutely necessary, it is also distressing and unpleasant. I commend the producers of this work for their courage to stand up and expose the shocking behavior of big business and government and their utter disregard for the greater good...the public at large. For everyone concerned about their health and knowing that knowledge is power, I seriously recommend this documentary to all of you.

Rutger Hauer is great. It's a pretty simple story line but he
is so believeable in any role. And he's very amusing with just
a lift of an eyebrow. It's worth watching anything with him
in it.

5 out of 5 stars An old clasic! .......2007-06-11

Been a Long time since I've seen this one, glad to have a copy!

4 out of 5 stars An American Zatoichi - the blind swordsman.......2006-11-20

This film takes the character from the original japanese television series "Zatoichi - the Blind Swordsman" starring Shintaro Katsu complete with a hidden cane sword. Rutger Hauer takes the role and puts the American twist in it. Shô Kosugi, a japanese actor who plays ninja in a lot of Japanese movie and television flicks, stars as an assassin who fights Hauer's character. They should make a sequel or a remake this time with a more serious plot...

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2006-09-14

A blind swordman, The fight scenes where great! This man has a sixth sence. The story was also great. A must see!

3 out of 5 stars A different kind of hero.......2006-07-16

If you liked the old "Kung Fu" TV series, you'll like this movie. Soft spoken and easy going Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer), like Kwai Chang Caine, roams the civilized world in search of ... peace and tranquility? And, like our Kung Fu hero of the Old West, he is ready to come out of his mild mannered shell to defend the weak and fight evil. How he acquired such fighting skills is even stranger than how Kwai Chang Caine became a Kung Fu Master. Especially considering he is blind.

So what sets this movie apart from other action movies? Rutger Hauer.

Rutger Hauer is a really good actor when he applies himself, which he does not always do in his films. But he is at his pinnacle here, making you believe that what you see is what you get. He will make you believe a blind man can develop a six sense (with a little help from a mysterious tribe somewhere.)

I took a half star off because of a lame attempt at humor. I like a laugh as much as the next guy and there was some decent humor interlaced in the story but, a blind man driving around in heavy traffic, going up one-way streets, is something I expect to see in a three stooge's movie. It was out of place here. Still, this is a good action movie. 3 1/2 stars.

You might expect that the cochlear implant, a device that can give deaf people the gift of hearing, would be embraced by the deaf community. Josh Aronson's Sound and Fury, a compelling and often devastating documentary, tells a different story. Two brothers, one deaf and one hearing, grapple with a decision concerning their deaf children, and the debate that rages through the extended family turns less on technology and medical concerns than social politics and culture. The deaf parents of a school-age girl fear what the implant would do to her unique identity, while the hearing parents of a toddler see no question at all. Aronson gives all sides their say, but ultimately the increasingly angry arguments reveal prejudices and fears from both sides and split the once-harmonious family, much like they have split hearing and deaf communities across the country. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars an important documentary..........2007-06-10

SOUND AND FURY, directed by Josh Aronson, takes a good look at the deaf culture and the cochlear implant, a device that poses a great challenge and [even] a threat to their interconnectedness, as a community. The implant, if implanted in a deaf child, has the power to bring them hearing. Potentially, if an implant recipient receives it early enough, they can even grow up to speak and interact with the hearing world in a coherent and connected manner. Though, this sounds like a great miracle that all parents would potentially want for their children (especially deaf parents), this is not that case at all.

The film follows the Artinian family. The two Artinian brothers live very different lives. While Peter was born deaf, went on to marry a deaf woman and has a deaf five year old daughter, his brother can hear, married a woman whose parents are deaf, but she is also hearing. Together, they have twin boys. One can hear, but the other was born deaf. When the option of the cochlear implant is presented, the brothers react very differently, as do sets of grandparents. In the Artinian family's community in Long Island, New York, the cochlear implant is a very controversial medical phenomenon. For starters, the question of deaf people's perceived inferiority in the eyes of of hearing people is a huge issue. The cochlear implant poses even greater leverage in the favor of the hearing world's sustained stereotype--that is the feeling that Peter and many of his friends in the deaf community share. Whereas, Mrs. Artinian, Peter's mother, believes that denying a deaf child the opportunity to hear is wrong and not giving their flesh and blood the best opportunity to integrate into the hearing world, to have better opportunities. These opportunities would otherwise be denied.

The title of this documentary, alone, really made me anticipate a very fiery debate on the cochlear implant issue, and I was right. The separation between the hearing world and the deaf world is a great and difficult one. I am so glad that this film was made because it was sensitively done, and it also teaches the viewer a great deal about the intricacies of moving between the world of the hearing and the world of the deaf. It really is a huge cultural difference--bigger than you would imagine. Well worth the acclaim!

5 out of 5 stars A breath-taking look.......2007-05-13

This film takes on the question of deafness: if you could make your deaf child hear, would you? It looks at two related families, one hearing and the other deaf, and chronicles their responses to this question. There are no heroes and no villians in this film, and certainly no easy answers. The stories are told without bias or agenda.

I saw this film while struggling with the decisions of my mild high-functioning autistic daughter's education. The discussion of Deaf Culture resonated for me because my daughter looked profoundly handicapped and incapable when integrated into a class of Normal/Typical (NT)children. Now she is in a school specifically for autistic children and she is flourishing. Autism was not her handicap, my blind desire to integrate her into an NT world was.

Her school, Aalborg Skolen in Aalborg, Denmark, also works with deaf children. I bought this video as a gift for the director of the school because the questions raised in it are universal.

This film is gripping, thought-provoking, and uplifting. It is a must for anyone who ever wondered "where do I belong in this world". I highly, highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting and disturbing.......2007-04-24

Hearing the -- and I cannot think of a more appropriate word for it -- bigoted assertions of the deaf-community individuals regarding cochlear implants for their children, I was consistently reminded of instances we've seen wherein some parent would assert, "I only had a high school education, and that has been good enough for me. No kid of mine needs to go to college." I wish the deaf community well, and their thinking requires a tremendous deal of exercise.

5 out of 5 stars Heart-wrenching.......2007-03-09

If you want to learn more about the Deaf community, this is a great film to start with.

5 out of 5 stars A must see!.......2007-01-16

This is an amazing and important film! You will become enlightened about a culture that you may have no previous knowledge of. I highly recommend this film...and it's sequel!

Taking a page from The Animatrix, Dark Fury is part of a new trend of bridging theatrical sequels. As an official product of a franchise, the 35-minute anime benefits from having the original actors voice the characters, including Vin Diesel as Riddick. This story opens with the new action hero and the two other survivors of Pitch Black already caught by a giant spaceship filled with dread. The sinewy leader has a unique--and creepy--jail for master villains and she has her sights set on Riddick. The film--indeed the series--is indebted to animator Peter Chung, who brings his techno style from his Aeon Flux series. His smooth animation for Riddick doesn't reinvent the character as much as give him a new, appealing fluidity. As anime goes, there's nothing really new here--plenty of action, cool killers, and dramatic spurts of blood--but it's a building block for how this genre might enliven movie series and sequels in the future. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2007-07-09

I really didn't expect much going in, not being a huge fan of anime. But since I really liked both movies, I figured I'd give this one a shot, and it fits into the story line very well.

4 out of 5 stars Good segway.......2007-05-19

This movie is supposed to be a "filler" between Pitch Black Pitch Black (Unrated) [HD DVD] and Chronicle of Riddick The Chronicles of Riddick (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut). The story isn't bad, and it continues in the Riddick tradition. I was sad it was not longer, but I was fairly happy with the story. It was interesting to see some of the behind the scenes commentary which helped paint some of the Riddick universe's picture.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Fury.......2007-04-11

This was gift for my husband who loves the whole chronicles of riddick thing. He loves it so i gave it 5 stars for that reason.I have not seen it nor do i plan to so if he loves it i love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good animation........2007-03-08

Story line was good. Covers events between "Pitch Black" and "Chronicles". However it was too short and may have been better if live action instead of animime.

5 out of 5 stars good but short.......2007-02-07

I am an anime fan and I love this movie. It is very short but I always think of it when I am watching cronicles of Riddick. I love the animation of Peter Chung it is brilliant and beautiful, not to mention the awesome fight scenes. I wish there were more of these to enjoy, 35 minutes is not enough for this amazing and inventive story.

4 out of 5 stars House of Fury.......2007-08-13

This was an enjoyable movie with a nice balance of action, comedy and plot. It was done in the true fashion of 'Shaolin Soccer' and has very nice special effects blended into the fight scenes. I wish the 'last fight scene' was done better, but overall still a great movie to add to your collection, if only for the jokes alone. =P

A good family martial arts movie for the kids to watch. Also in english.

1 out of 5 stars so-so kungfu movie with a very stupid screenplay.......2006-09-26

if you love 'final fantasy xxx' kinda movies, then this one is for you. a ridiculous screenplay with lota stunt and fighting scenes. american anti-terrorist agent was crippled by a british hongkong secret agent, then this crippled american agent turned into the most vicious terrorist leader, with bunch of young killers including his son, to hunt down the hongkong cantonese guy who crippled him? my god, what kind education level the screenplay writers were received in hongkong? since you have spent so much money to produce this movie, destroyed and ruined so many furniture and home accessories, you should at least have the i.q. to dream up some believable plot and scenario, right? but you guys just didn't care, because you guys have faith in nowadays' brainless x generation, anything goes, who cares about logic or reasonable storyline, who cares. so a ridiculous movie was then produced in this way.

4 out of 5 stars Kung-fu Fighting -- It Runs in the Family: Entertaining Hong Kong Martial Arts Action.......2006-07-24

`House of Fury' is a quite entertaining kung-fu action film that does not take itself seriously. It nicely re-uses the basic story of Robert Rodriguez's joyful `Spy Kids' series, and adds lots of well-choreographed kung-fu actions (advisor Yuen Woo Ping).

Anthony Wong (`Infernal Affair') is Yue Siu Bo, a middle-aged doctor who runs his own health clinic in Hong Kong. He is a good-natured person and a family man, but his habitual tales about his old days as martial arts master and top spy agent are very embarrassing for his children, Nicky (Stephen Fung, also director of the film) and Natalie (Gillian Chung, `The Twins Effect' and one of the popular duo Twins). Nicky and Natalie do not believe a single word of his father's braggadocio until one day he is really kidnapped by a baddie in wheelchair, Rocco (Michael Wong) who showed up before him to settle the score with the guy who inflicted a severe injury to him many years ago.

The story is thus simple, but it works in this kind of action-packed film. Though helped by stunts, smooth editing, and some wires, all the martial arts actions are above average, generating enough excitement and fun with the characters' super-fast, gravity-defying movements. I will not be surprised to find the good action from Josie Ho who plays a deadly assassin, but it is surprising that Gillian Chung can show good skills as kung-fu fighter, who has obviously trained so much since `The Twins Effect.'

Charlene Choi (the other Twin) also appears, but sadly her role is just an extended cameo. Daniel Wu also appears, but his fans would be disappointed with his role which does not play a significant role until one moment. On the other hand, veteran Wu Ma steals the scenes with some good (and you might say unbelievable) actions, and Jake Strickland as the baddie's son (who is always playing Nintendo) also shines in two scenes where he shows his true colors as capable fighter.

Of course this is not `Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' or `Kung-hu Hustle.' Stephen Fung as directo knows what he is doing, with his approach which is very orthodox, and even simple in letting his co-stars show what they can do on the screen. No grace and beauty of bamboo trees, no gimmicks and parodies. Only good martial arts actions, and they are very entertaining. Recommended for the fans of martial arts actions, or the sweet and lovely Twins.

4 out of 5 stars Great Heroes, Weak Villain........2006-01-15

House Of Fury is almost superb and that is the most disappointing thing about this film. Teddy Yu (Anthony Wong) leads a double life as a chiropractor and secret agent. His teenaged children, Nicky (Stephen Fung, who also directed the film) and Natalie (Gillian Chung from the pop group Twins) think his 007 stories are all nonsense. When Teddy is kidnapped by assasins who work for a man named Rocco (Michael Wong from Beast Cops),the kung fu kids search for the baddies. Rocco is after Teddy's longtime friend Chiu (Ma Wu) and his killers are tough. Rocco, on the other hand is the weakest character in the movie. On the disc cover, he's in a fighting stance with Wolverine-like claws. In the movie, he's a wheelchair bound crybaby who is paralyzed from the neck down. Rocco's young son, Nelson (newcomer Jake Strickland) is the baddest ass on the evil team. This kid is awesome and is one of the main reasons to buy this dvd. Daniel Wu (Cop On A Mission, One Nite In Mongkok) and Charlene Choi (the other Twin) are entertaining, but they don't do too much here. Overall, House Of Fury is a nice reminder of the way kung fu movies used to be in the 70's and 80's. With Yuen Woo Ping, Jackie Chan's production team, Stephen Fung, and the great cast involved, it should have been a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Good teaching aid.......2007-01-09

This (along with a few other DVDs) was purchased to help some youngsters (seven and nine year olds) understand a bit about the music they are learning to play.

It succeeds admirably. The treatment is brisk and, of necessity, superficial; but that's fine for the age group or for those new to Beethoven.

    Product Description

While aspartame was the single focus in Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World, Sweet Remedy demonstrates that a corrupt flagship regulatory agency has given birth to numerous toxins in our food supply. This is no accident. A close examination of the U.S. Corporate power stucture demonstates that neurotoxic foods resulting in a dumber populace is simply a matter of policy. In the United States and through each nation within its global corporate grasp, maintaining a healthy mind and body is an act of civil disobediance.Ultimately, healing has become the path of resistance for informed individuals improving their health. We interview a host of MD's and Natural Health practioners to gain the clearest possible perspective for a path to recovery. Perhaps the sweetest remedy this film offers is the hope provided by witnessing a variety of groups as they withstand the confusion, casualties and obstacles involved with taking control of their food and their health. Most kung fu epics succeed or fail on the spectacle of their fight scenes, but Chinese TV movie First of Fury: Sworn Revenge is more engaging because of its rapidly paced story. After his family is murdered by marauding bandits, hot-headed farm boy Chen Jun (Donnie Yen from Iron Monkey and many other Hong Kong action adventures) takes his surviving little sister to the big city of Shanghai, where they get caught up in a web of gangsters, corrupt businessmen, and mysterious women. The mix of historical epic and sheer melodrama, with its dizzying changes of fortune, is like a kung fu version of Charles Dickens. The narrative loses some steam in the second half (of almost four hours), when Chen Jun joins a martial arts school that gets torn apart by envy and pride, but Yen remains engaging and the action comes regularly. --Bret Fetzer

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It's Ok, but the whole TV series should have been released instead.......2007-03-19

This is actually an edit of the 25 episode TV series Donnie Yen starred in called Fist of Fury. I wanted to point that out because the previous reviews thinks this is a standalone movie or gives that impression. This is not the case. This is essentially a part 2 to condensing the TV series. Think of the recent 'recap' DVDs put out for shows [most noted, Heroes]. Part 1 is Fist of Fury: Sworn Revenge. I give this 4 out of 5 because the series was a stage for Donnie Yen's range to shine through early in his career as an actor. I recommend this for any recent Donne Yen fan [especially in light of recent films SPL, Dragon Tiger Gate and the upcoming Flashpoint formerly called City With No Mercy] or fans that haven't seen his TV work. The commentary is a nice bonus for fans of hearing how scenes were put together and the ideas for doing what they did. If you can, try to get ahold of the actual full 25 eps. Pretty sure eng subbed versions are really rare.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing - Donnie does "Dis" Service.......2006-08-05

Out of all the Huo Yuan Jia and his student Chen Zhen films - this is by far the worst. I am so glad that Donnie has come to be a much better actor - it's a wonder anyone would cast him after this role... bad acting overshadowed his kung fu talent. The saddest part - this movie had a large budget and still couldn't compare to any of the old movies or series. Worse there is NOTHING original about this version - NOTHING. A matter of fact if you have seen the Bruce Lee version you may notice some of the same camera angles!! PS Chen Zhen never had a Japanese girlfriend (in case you were wondering). All I can say, in the words of Chen Zhen (Donnie Yen) "WOOOOOO OOOO WO OW WOO - Stay away!"

1 out of 5 stars An insult to Bruce.......2006-01-16

After Bruce Lee's death, there were a motley crew of imposters trying to jump on the fame band wagon of the "Dragon", there was Bruce Le, Bruce Li and Dragon Le, some were good most were corny, but they were given some note of credibility; to an occidental audience due to the well known actors who worked with them in these films, (this is what made Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle a hit, by using wen Wo Ping as choreographer and veteran actors and real masters like Chiu Chi Liang and Yuen Wah.
The most incredible thing about Bruce Lee is that some of his fight movements had to be slowed down in order to be visible to the audience,
hence shooting scenes were the camera is obviously speeded up cheapens the integrity of the kung fu, such as in this mediocre flik and the overated Iron Monkey.

4 out of 5 stars A TRUE Bruce Lee Tribute.......2005-04-22

I finally got my hands on Donnie Yen's Fist of Fury: Sworn Revenge, which was pushed as a prequel to Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection and his own version of Fist of Fury, and I was breathless behind the storyline, the colorful characters, the Cantonese w/t English subtitles setup(authenticity), the special affects and the action. What we have here is an awesome foundation for the storyline feautured in Bruice Lee's Fist of Fury(Chinese Connection). However, the only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5 was because: (1)to quote another post, it did look more like a day time soap than an actual kung-fu flick, but with all the action, the setup becomes obsolete(lol), (2)Sworn Vengeance is somewhat of a prequel and companion to Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, but is a much better companion to Donnie Yen's Fist of Fury considering the fact that Yen's FOF features more prior to the death of Chen's master before the famous burial scene(TEACHER! TEACHER!!!), and (3)While I enjoyed the efx, it DID look like they were fast fwd'g the action to make it look like Yen was faster than he was. Nonetheless, we have a REAL, modern day tribute to Bruce Lee's work in Fist of Fury. However, Sworn Vengeance is more of a companion to Yen's FOF than to Lee's...for a TRUE companion to Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection(Fist of Fury) I STRONGLY recommend Bruce Li's Chinese Connection 2(Fist of Fury 2). I also recommend Fist of Legend(Jet Li) which is another modern remake of Fist of Fury, but with a different twist. But to make a long story short...Fist of Fury:Sworn Vengeance + Fist of Fury = SUPERB!!! Bruce Lee would be proud!

3 out of 5 stars fist of fury.......2004-09-11

It;s supposed to be an awesome TV series about Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury" ( "Chinese Connection" in US) played by Donnie Yen. I saw the whole series on TV. But cramping it into one 2 hour movie?!! it's not easy at all. The story line is still good (of course it's still way far if you compare it with the real 27 series/ episodes) but you can catch the resumed story. Fighting scenes are awesome but I agreed that they fastforward it as about 2-3XX on your DVD. Donnie is fast but not that fast. He was a world Tai Chi Champion. I love him in certain way he's better than Bruce Lee, in other ways, Bruce Lee is much better than him, so he just did that movie coz he appreciate Bruce Lee and Chen Jen legend. It's a tribute to Bruce Lee. Not trying to make a copycat at all. So just enjoy it as the movie itself, don't compare it to Fist of Fury by Bruce Lee (Chinese Connection), Jackie Chan (The New Fist of Fury) or Jet Lee (Fist of Legend). They all have their own positive and negative side.
I just dissapointed with the back cover of this DVD, the show the scenes which is not in the DVD at all. They are the Korean kickboxer and Chen Jen's senior who is jealous to Chen Jen. That was two great fighting scenes in this movie but the just hook me up on the back cover, I didn't find it at all in the movie.
Overall if you don't see the TV series, don't judge Donnie Yen and this movie, this is a pretty good movie. Thanks.
