The sum of its parts was definitely greater than the season whole as Gilmore Girls kicked off its fourth year by separating its high-powered mother-daughter duo. After years of toil at snooty private school Chilton, Rory (Alexis Bledel) was finally off to the greener pastures of college as she began her first year at Yale. The not-so-long distance put a crimp in her relationship with her mother, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), as the two were forced to continue their chatty conversations via phone--not exactly the same as trading barbs face-to-face. While Rory adjusted to college life with cranky roommate Paris (Liza Weil) in tow, Lorelai found herself without a daughter, but gained a boyfriend in the form of Jason "Digger" Stiles (Chris Eigeman), a childhood friend and now her father's business partner. But the lure of Stars Hollow, the Gilmores' cherished country town, would prove too hard to resist, as Lorelai finally made plans to open her own inn, and the two ladies found themselves attracted to town residents--for Lorelai, an intensifying of her friendship with diner owner Luke (Scott Patterson), and for Rory, a return to old boyfriend Dean (Jared Padalecki), which put a decided tension into a show that sorely needed it. Nevermind that both men were married to other women!

The first half of the fourth season definitely foundered, as the show's usually topnotch creative team struggled to find a way to keep the Gilmore chemistry afloat despite separating their main characters. There wasn't much drama to be found for Rory in starting college, and though it got off to a great start, Lorelai's relationship with Jason never fully gelled. However, once the show got its girls into the arms of their Stars Hollow men, it turned around almost immediately, surging towards a creative revival that put its ratings higher than they'd ever been before. Along the way to its surprising and complex season finale, there were great episodes to be had: "Girls in Bikinis, Boys Doin' the Twist," which found Rory and Paris on spring break; "The Reigning Lorelai," centering on an unexpected funeral; "The Festival of Living Art," which had Stars Hollow resident re-creating classic works; and "Luke Can See Her Face," which finally brought the Luke-Lorelai romance to the forefront. The season may have started out rough, but this fourth year ended with a bang, and the promise of more fireworks to come. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Season........2007-09-01

Gilmore Girls is the type of show you share with a best friend, sister, mother or daughter. The quick wit will have you laughing, and rewinding trying to catch it all. This is a series that never dissapoints!

3 out of 5 stars OK Season.......2007-08-08

I love the quick wit of the "Gilmore Girls" and the relationship between the Lorelais as well as those with the characters who populate their town. This season was like many college freshman years are--a year of transition--its clear that a lot of things are uncertain about how the show will move forward given that the cast is split up. This season has its moments so it isn't altogether disappointment but hang in there until season five, when the girls hit their stride again.

4 out of 5 stars Love from across the pond........2007-05-16

I am an English fan who was put onto this series by a friend. I did not know a thing about them till then, there were no Gilmore's in my life.
I bought series one and waited to see if they were that good. I am now on series 5. A few people thought 4 lost strength with Rory going away, but I found it kept going beautifully, especiall the business side of it with Mr Gilmore's comings and goings and how they had a knock on effect. I love this series and will be very sad to see the last one ever, but I gather series 7 is going, so still have some more to look forward to. I am lucky to have found a little multi-regional DVD player so I can take the Gilmore's away to boring events and journeys and even dog sitting on the west coat of Ireland, where there was no TV signal. A great bonus! They will crack the boredom anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Smart, funny...and set in Connecticut!.......2007-04-01

Having literally grown up together, 19-year-old Rory Gilmore and her 35-year-old mother Lorelai are best friends. They share a love for breathless quip-filled conversation and coffee, frequenting Luke's Diner in the downtown of Stars Hollow, their fictitious Connecticut suburb.

In Season 1, 16-year-old Rory decides she wants to transfer from the public high school to Chilton, a ritzy private school in Hartford. To make it happen, Lorelai has to make the ultimate sacrifice -- beseech her parents Richard and Emily, with whom she hasn't been on good terms since she announced her teenage pregnancy. Although estranged with Lorelai, the elder Gilmores are more than eager to accept their young granddaughter into their lives. They agree to foot the bill -- on one condition. Both Lorelai and Rory must attend dinner at the elder Gilmores' home every Friday evening.

Reluctantly, Lorelai agrees. The resulting Friday night dinners set the stage for much hilarity and snark -- as well as the occasional glimpse into the Gilmores' sad past, hinting at everything that went wrong in their relationship, well before Rory's birth.

Also seen on the show are diner proprietor Luke, a quiet, loyal friend to both mother and daughter with a building crush on Lorelai; Lane, the Korean-American daughter of a stern single mother and Rory's best friend; Sookie, chef at the Independence Inn, which Lorelai manages; Kirk, a quirky "townie" who mysteriously shows up everywhere anyone's doing anything; dance instructor and romance expert Miss Patty; and many others. Rory's father Christopher is also around sporadically, as he and Lorelai fight an attraction which has intertwined throughout their lives, but never seems to work out.

In this season, Rory becomes a freshman at Yale, while Lorelai and Sookie realize their lifelong dream of opening their own inn. Rory's ex-boyfriend Dean is hired to work on the construction, and Rory's discomfort is increased when she's invited to his wedding. Lorelai dates a colleague of her father's, and Sookie gives birth to son Davey.

Although the show is supposedly set in Connecticut, the writers and producers never really make that believable to a native (i.e. Rory and Lorelai walking around with thin coats, wide open, supposedly in the middle of winter. Still, I can overlook that -- it's fun having one of my favorite shows set in my own state. That way, I almost feel like I might really bump into a Stars Hollow resident somewhere along my way... :-)

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed.......2007-03-29

I would suggest this series to any Mother and Daughter, LOL. My 20 year old daughter and I have a blast watching the Loreli's.

We really enjoy the witty words and the fast pace.

Originally called Sex Crimes, executive producer Dick Wolf wisely opted for something less lurid when the second in the inexhaustible Law & Order franchise hit the air in 1999. Still, as the opening voiceover makes clear, the "sexually based offenses" investigated by New York's Special Victims Unit can be "especially heinous." This six-DVD boxed set includes all 22 episodes of the first compelling season.

Wolf penned series premier "Payback," which sets the scene, but not the tone. It's a lively, if uneasy mix between horror (rape) and comedy (risqué banter). As the show progressed, humor would be written out altogether (leaving Richard Belzer's Homicide-derived John Munch with increasingly less to do). Less emphasis would also be placed on the home lives of this "elite squad of dedicated detectives." Mostly, "Payback" introduces us to the unit, centering around partners Olivia Benton (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). For two people with so little in common, they make a terrific team--arguably one of TV's best. Stabler is married with four children; Benton is single and her closest relationship is with her mother (Elizabeth Ashley). While Stabler can get a little rough with suspects, Benton tends to over-empathize with the victims. They report to the no-nonsense Captain Cragen (Law & Order vet Dann Florek). Like the parent program's Lenny Briscoe, he's a recovering alcoholic. Dean Winters and Michelle Hurd round out the rock-solid cast.

As it would continue to do in successive years, SVU's first season proved that network TV could explore sex crimes without being salacious or exploitative. "Uncivilized," for instance, concerns a child murder that is automatically pinned on a local sex offender, when the actual perpetrator isn't quite so obvious. "Disrobed," in which Brian Cassidy (Winters) leaves the department and Benson (with whom he had a brief affair) shoots a suspect is another standout in a strong year. SVU was followed by Criminal Intent in 2001 and features several guest appearances from Jerry Orbach (Briscoe) and Angie Harmon (Abbie Carmichael) from the original Law & Order. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Law and Order SVU Season 1.......2007-07-12

This Series has many pluses and minuses.

First of all the minuses. The writers of this series have a PC preachy world view. ALL of the bad guys are white males. If a victim's family happens to be conservative or traditional, they are presented as partly at fault for the victim's demise. One episode was contrived (to reveal it would be a semi spoiler). A foot patrol cop was invited to a party of glitterati and he brought his camcorder, how convenient! Even the illegal immigrants are white East Europeans. In NYC are there not even cases that only involve people of color?

However, just like Liberals who watch 24 for its virtues; L&O SVU has its strong points. Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni do well as Benson and Stabler. You believe that a single career woman and a father of four can work well together without asking how. There is also the crime solving mystery elements in the episodes.

The PC detracts but it is enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Best of all the L&O.......2007-03-15

I love this show. I can't wait for the rest of the seasons to come out. Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have great chemistry. I would watch this show off and on, but when I got the first season on DVD I couldn't stop watching and then I got the second, third and fifth. I stayed up until 4:30 in the morning one night to finish it. What happend to Season 4? Why did they put out season 5 before 4? Anyway, this is such a great show. It gets more and more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting and compelling.......2007-03-09

I have found that all the law and order series are brilliantly conceived shows that have established themselves as mainstays of television viewing. I am collecting all the dvd's that have been released so far, but am frustrated that they allow so long to elapse between releases.
We watch at least 3-4 episodes of the different series daily, and need more so that we can keep up. Foxtel caters to our addiction well, but never well enough.

5 out of 5 stars La mejor serie policíaca.......2007-02-15

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful opening!.......2007-02-07

I just love this show. The actors as very skilled and take on their rolls almost as though they are real detectives. Their charisma fits the subject manner, and their behavior is not as stereotypical as one might think for an evening show. The end of the first season leaves you hanging, so I was very happy that I had season two already. I would have been disappointed if I had watched it on television and had to wait! All in all, great acting, great content, great show!

"Sometimes it's the smallest decisions that can change your life forever," states Felicity in the pilot episode of this fervently loved series. Not that impulsively defying your parents, ditching plans to go to Stanford Medical School, and moving 3,000 miles to New York to follow an unrequited high school crush who doesn't even remember your name is a small decision. But it does indeed change our winsome heroine's life forever. Golden Globe winner Keri Russell lights up the screen in her star-is-born role as the luxuriantly maned Felicity. For its audience demographic, the "previously on Felicity" soap opera elements make this series' freshman year as compellingly watchable as the early years of Beverly Hills 90210 and Dawson's Creek.

Propelling the first season is the triangle of Felicity, the charismatic Ben (Scott Speedman), and charming doofus Noel (Scott Foley). But at the heart of the series is its real-world portrayal of college life, and Felicity's struggle to forge a life independent of her disapproving but ultimately supportive parents. Her sardonic, spell-casting now-you-see-her-now-you-don't roommate Meaghan doesn't think Felicity will last the year. "This might all be a colossal mistake," Felicity admits early on. (No, that would be your ill-advised haircut in Season 2.) Felicity's ensemble also includes former pink Power Ranger Amy Jo Johnson as Julie, Felicity's best friend and later rival for Ben's affections, whose own personal travails include searching for her birth mother (Malcolm in the Middle's Jane Kaczmarek). Look for a pre-Alias Jennifer Garner as Noel's old girlfriend Hannah in the episode "Thanksgiving," and listen for Janeane Garofalo as the voice of the unseen Sally, with whom Felicity shares audiocassettes relating her coming-of-age experiences and hard-earned life lessons. --Donald Liebenson

Description

It's high school graduation day and from the moment shy, beautiful Felicity Porter asks handsome Ben Covington to sign her yearbook, the course of her life is changed forever.

5 out of 5 stars My FAVORITE Show!.......2007-08-23

This show was so awesome; it never got the following it deserved. This first season is truly excellent! Felicity is just the story of a very regular girl following her crush to college, and it all plays out amazingly. I related to this character a lot b/c I was the same age at the time it came out. I definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes a realistic drama, women especially.

1 out of 5 stars A show about dumb teens, bad music and horrible writing...........2007-07-18

I would expect a show like this to come from Disney (who also gave us that Hanna Moron show).

This series had incredibly bad writing, shallow performances, and an even worse cast of no talent hacks all playing the self-centered fools. I'm glad this show met with cancellation early.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Felicity fans.......2007-06-27

Season 1 is my favorite season of the show. The feelings and memories you get from watching this episodes are the best. It's a classic show, best drama ever. The story telling has no comparison to any other show.
If you like Felicity, this box set is a must have. If you're not a big fan, you will be by the time you've seen the 22 episodes of this season.

Felicity will always be my favorite tv show, and so I had to buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars I can't imagine not having my "Felicity" DVD set!.......2007-03-29

Rarely do I love a series so much as I love "Felicity" (and "Gilmore Girls"). Those are the only 2 TV series that have my undying devotion, admiration and adoration! I'm not good with words so all I can say is you MUST watch "Felicity" from beginning to end. Do not miss a single moment let alone a single episode. Many people love seeing Felicity with Ben, but I am 100% a Felicity & Noel fan! They're so cute and so good together! Noel loves her without reservation! Ben on the other hand has a hard time figuring out who he is. Felicity's haircut is not so bad. It mirrors real life decisions. We all at one point or another have decided to chop off our hair dramatically for one silly reason or another. I know I did! Let me not forget mentioning my other 2 most favorite characters: Javier and Megan! They're unforgettable and steal the show almost every time they're in a scene! Sean is quite charming a character also! He's now in "Heroes" ... imagine that!

Rent this series if you don't want to buy it, you skeptical person you! Rent it! Watch it! And then you will end up buying the entire series! I promise! It's as good as it gets! And ever since, I have yet to see another TV series that tugs at my heart strings nearly the same way! Except for "Gilmore Girls" ... of course! I am after all ... Lorelai Gilmore! :)

5 out of 5 stars The beginning.......2007-02-21

I had recently graduated from college when this show first aired but that didn't stopped me from indentifying with it. It's great to go back and watch this season and live again the emotions of being Felicity Porter. I think the beauty of this character created by J.J. Abrams is that there's a little bit of Felicity in all of us, no matter if you're male or female. The premise of the show was that the main character decides to follow Ben, her high school crush, to New York but deep down we all know that Ben was just the decoy to start a very interesting journey of self-discovery. Watching all the episodes again lets you re-discover all the characters, and if you're one of those people who have the 4 seasons, you'll start getting the idea of how they're going to develop. At first you can't understand why Felicity would follow Ben (Scott Speedman) to NY (aside from the way he looks). But getting to hear what he wrote in her yearbook and the way he talks to her at the end of the pilot episode (roof scene) he totally redeems himself and you start to understand. Yes, maybe real life doesn't turn that way but it's great to see if it did. The season has many many good moments. The eternal love triangle and comic relief of the show gets established when we meet Noel (Scott Foley), Meghan (the great Amanda Foreman), Sean (Greg Grunberg) and Javier (Ian Gomez). We also get to meet Elena and Julie. There are so many touching moments throught the season. I really felt for Felicity when her tape gets played at the dorm's party, when she finallys gives herself a chance to like somebody else and Noel's girlfriend appears, when she finds out that Ben likes Julie. It's an emotional rollercoaster for the main character and one can totally relate. That's why I didn't mind at all the last episode when we have Felicity caugth between Ben and Noel. I think the story needed to explore that role reversal (Ben pursuing Felicity) so we could start seeing her grow. Besides who doesn't just LOVE that first kiss between Felicity and Ben!

Basically the show had great writing, great music, good stories, great acting and gave way to a solid narration of the emotional evolution of a very human bunch of characters that I think a lot people (especially those WHO GOT the show) miss. And experiencing this show shile you live in New York you relate even more.

P. S. I can't picture any other actress than the very talented Keri Russell playing Felicity. In the DVD extras you can see her audition tape and you can tell why Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams fell in love with her. The extras are not that abundant but getting to watch the original pilot was a treat.

4 out of 5 stars This Series needs to be seen in it's original Hi-Def.......2007-08-28

Disappointing on DVD. When this series appeared on UPN it was shown in Hi-Def. According to IMDB, this series was shot digitally in 1080P/24. I have a 70 inch Top-of-the-line Sony HD-TV (KDS-R70XBR2). The network HD showings were spectacular, especially the opening. The eye-poping picture you invite your friends over to see what Hi-Def truly is. The DVD release of Enterprise was not as good as most of the TNG DVD movies. I enjoyed the series in HD on the UPN network. I would buy the series on Blu-Ray when it is available in that format.

5 out of 5 stars An Enterprising Trek Series.......2007-07-16

When I first watched the beginning of "Enterprise" I was rather dismayed. What is this musak? Where was the Star Trek title? And the jingoistic patriotism! It was so unlike what has gone before (and not in an especially good way). Having said that, I have found the show itself quite enjoyable, entertaining and as always with Star Trek optimistic and hopeful for a brighter and more tolerant future. With time I have become rather fond of Enterprise, the adventures of Captain Archer, and his bold & daring crew.

I do have some problem with Star Treks predictable and formulaic approach, such as... the name of a ship is nearly always Enterprise, why not the Endeavour or the Discovery? And surely it would have been a good gesture to all the devoted Star Trek fans around the world to have included a foreign actor or actress (an Australian a European or an Indian for example) in the Enterprise cast, other than the usual Americans or Brits. But an even more important and significant issue to me as a Bi woman, I feel saddened that there has not yet been a bisexual or homosexual character in any Star Trek series. Indeed it has not even had an episode or plot relating to - LGBT sexuality - in any Star Trek production!!! Unfortunately also including Enterprise. Of ALL the shows on television Star Trek has no excuse, the Federation of Planets is meant to be cosmopolitan and diverse isn't it? I think an enlightened organisation like this would not exclude people based on their sexual orientation, and that this topical issue should be addressed by the makers of Star Trek if they want it to remain relevant to a post-modern audience. If Gene Roddenberry was still alive today I believe the subject of a gay, lesbian or Bi character in a Star Trek series would have been breached in a positive and embracing way many years ago. I also think Enterprise is at times a little bit gung-ho and brash and that this is not in keeping with the general Star Trek spirit, but still I relish the show.

Despite these misgivings, I love watching Enterprise and have looked forward to each new episode. The thought provoking stories, the attention to the details of the sleekly stylish sets and props, the moody and dramatic lighting, the beautiful costumes, the look of the aliens and their varied cultures or the special effects is as with all Star Trek productions impeccable and tasteful. The cast is made up of talented people (many with a theatre background) that makes you care what happens to their respective characters. All these elements combined make Enterprise addictive viewing, and what sets it (like all Star Trek series) apart from other lesser sci-fi shows. I also like the new idea of a story-arc that spans whole seasons, I think it works, the episodic story was getting a little boring. So it is a damn shame that Enterprise will be cut short after only four seasons and will not be able to complete its seven year mission, especially as it is just getting into its stride. I feel like many other Trekkies it seems, that the Paramount "executives" have made a rash error of judgement in cancelling Enterprise. Surely it would have been a wiser decision to let Enterprise run its full course of seven seasons and then to have waited to see if there is still a market for a new Star Trek series?

We should thank the heavens for DVD so that the valiant but ill fated, Star Trek: Enterprise series will at least be saved for posterity as a valuable and treasured part of the Star Trek canon. The sleek silver casing that the DVDs come in is truly elegant, I just wish there had been seven of them!!! The special features are fantastic too, with animated menus they provide hours of behind the scenes info and trivia that gives one a deeper appreciation of what goes into making a series like Enterprise. If you are a Trekkie Star Trek: Enterprise should be on your wishlist if you are collecting the various series on DVD, for the completist like me I would not have it otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best !!!.......2007-07-11

This is the best Star Trek series ever !!! I have watched Star Trek since I was a little kid (Old Fart Now !)and this is the absolute best one !!!
The DVD features and quality are Top Notch !!!

4 out of 5 stars Is it an Asian import?.......2007-07-01

Caveat emptor / buyer beware!

This is just a note to people considering buying "Star Trek: Enterprise The Complete Seasons 1-4" on DVD from certain Amazon sellers.

If you see the Star Trek: Enterprise DVD collection in a single box rather than in four separate boxes (one box per season), it's likely an Asian import edition rather than from the studio.

Especially beware the appellation "the Chosen Collection" which was copied from the complete collector's edition of Joss Whedon's TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Buffy "Chosen Collection" is official while the Star Trek: Enterprise "Chosen Collection" is not.

Furthermore, if the DVD set mentions it's region free, then it almost certainly is an Asian import, because the studio does not have a region free version of Star Trek: Enterprise on DVD (at the time of this review).

It's true the Asian import edition will be considerably cheaper, and as I mentioned region free, but there are drawbacks as well. For example, the audio and video quality suffers relative to the regular edition. Also, if there's a scratch or other slight defect on one of the DVDs, most of the sellers won't refund the buyer's money or replace the DVD(s). Some might, but it could be tricky (and perhaps despite their claims to the contrary). Not to mention that purchasing an Asian import means the money goes to the Asian distributor and its affiliates rather than to, say, the cast or crew or anyone else on the actual production team -- which in turn could presumably be funneled into bringing back Star Trek (although it's debatable).

And please make sure to read Oren D. Applequist's helpful comment below regarding World Express Mail Service (EMS).

Anyway, obviously people are free to do what they like, but I'm mentioning all this so buyers can at least be aware of the risks.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-06-11

I loved the series. I only wish they had made more after season 4. I thought the crew worked well together personality wise and the story lines were great. I especially liked the relationship between Trip and T'pol. It's about time they allowed a romance between crew members. Does anyone know if their planning to make series 5?

Dick Wolf (Law & Order) has claimed that Arthur Conan Doyle inspired him to create Criminal Intent. Indeed, the brilliant--if socially awkward--Robert "Bobby" Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and cool-headed partner Alexandra "Alex" Eames (Kathryn Erbe) do come across like a modern day Holmes and Watson. Rather than England, however, they're members of New York's major case squad. (Trivia buffs may find it of interest that D'Onofrio played Holmes's arch-nemesis Moriarty in the 2002 made-for-cable movie Case of Evil.) The show, which premiered in 2001, added "criminal" to the successful "law" and "order" equation. Each episode moves back and forth between the efforts of Goren and Eames to track down "the worst criminal offenders" and the efforts of the offenders to evade capture. The detectives report to plainspoken Captain Deakins (Jamey Sheridan) and work closely with urbane ADA Carter (Courtney B. Vance).

Criminal Intent could hardly be mistaken for a comedy, but it can be lighter on its feet than Law & Order and Special Victims Unit--even if the crimes are just as grim. The fun comes from watching Goren and Eames do whatever it takes to catch the perps. As long as it's legal--they'll do it. Highlights of the first season include "Jones" with Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London) as a philandering lawyer, "Badge" with Viola Davis (Solaris) as a corrupt ex-cop, and "Phantom" with Michael Emerson (The Practice) as a desperate family man. The last is based on the same real-life case that inspired the critically acclaimed French film Time Out (in the movie and teleplay, the protagonist pretends to work for the UN; in reality, Jean-Claude Romand pretended to be a doctor). Other cases, also often suggested by actual events, concern burglary, forgery, and money laundering--although murder is always mixed up in there somewhere. Featuring guest appearance from Law & Order detectives Green (Jesse L. Martin) and Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) in "Poison" and Lieutenant Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson) in "Badge." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2007-07-02

From `The First Year' DVD to this one quite a lot of the episodes, (enough to comment on), seem to follow a pattern.

That is `poor' kid(s), at the beginning of the show are involved in some criminal act. Later that crime is linked to a `wealthier-class' person(s) criminal act. The 'poor' kid(s) are 'forgotten' about. A woman (usually) becomes prime suspect. She is subsequently arrested, tried, found guilty and sent down.

And that's about it.

Seeing L&O back to back on dvd as opposed to weekly or seasonally on TV also really highlight plenty of ism.

5 out of 5 stars L&O CI: 1st yr.......2007-05-25

I have not been this satisfied with a cop show in a long time. Law and Order the original was such a good show and kept my attention, with CI coming on board, Law and Order is even better. I have to say that CI is my favorite and I hope that it's on TV for a long time to come. The acting is great by Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe, really a grat show.

5 out of 5 stars Best show on TV!!.......2007-04-03

This was actually the second DVD I'd purchased of the same show, same year. That's because my son and daughter-in-law, also addicted to the program, had borrowed my copy and were reluctant to give it back. This 1st year DVD collection is especially fine because it features lots of extras --interviews with all the principal actors and the director and the writer. Trust me --you can't go wrong if you are a serious "Bobby and Alex" fan!

This is a good 1st season set for the series of Criminal Intent. I strongly recommend this if you are a fan.

2 out of 5 stars How About A Best Of SNL By Year?.......2007-06-23

How about making 'Best Of' Saturday Night Live by year? Not by host, not something with interviews and commentary, just best skits only and by year. Best of 1978, Best Of 1986, Best Of 1994, etc...

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-16

I was looking forward to a trip down memory lane with all the best skits from the first 5 years of SNL. Instead, with this DVD, I got lots of commentary and background information, with only a few skits. The skits shown weren't even available in their entirety, which was frustrating. So, I ended up feeling that this DVD was not worth the money, did not at all provide me with what I thought I was getting based on its title.

2 out of 5 stars A Total Puff Piece - Save Your Money.......2006-11-08

Unfortunately, there is no real substance to this documentary. Though a few of the interviews are interesting, all are cursory at best. You're not seeing full skits and there is no criticism to speak of. I give SNL The First 5 Years 2 stars, as it's ideal for a foreign exchange film student who never heard of or saw Saturday Night Live. Save your money and watch the gazillion re-reruns.

5 out of 5 stars You're STUPID! .......2006-10-24

I hate to quote Dr. Phil, but this DVD is a documentary which aired as a special on NBC. I knew that when I bought it, but apparently this escaped a few people who have given this a negative rating. This documentary, directed by Kenneth Bowser, is amazing, featuring interviews with Lorne Michaels, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Laraine Newman, Steve Martin, Buck Henry, Dick Ebersol and countless others on the original staff. The stuff he couldn't use on the original broadcast due to time constraints Bowser has seen fit to make another, companion documentary. I can't tell you how fascinating these programs are, you get to go inside and see how the creative process works. It's great stuff...what is the matter with you people?!

4 out of 5 stars The Early Days of SNL.......2006-06-24

This is not a "Best of" compilation and does not claim to be. But it is a must-see for any Saturday Night Live fan. It's an amazing inside look at the birth of this landmark show. Through interviews, hilarious clips, and musical performances, take a journey through the early days of SNL. Those who were around to watch in 1975 will relive some classic moments and get some behind-the-scenes insight into the struggle to get them on the air in the first place. And those who are new to the original cast will never see the current SNL the same way again. It pales in comparison.

From its gritty documentary look to its signature note-knocking "tching-tching" that signals scene changes, Law & Order was a groundbreaking cop show when it debuted in 1990. It has since earned Emmys for Best Dramatic Series and spun off satellite franchises, and reruns of the original series are as omnipresent in syndication as those of I Love Lucy. Devoted fans and those who came late to the series can catch it from the beginning with this six-disc set that contains all 22 episodes from the inaugural season.

Law & Order is television's most resilient series. It has survived wholesale changes to its ensemble. One of the secrets of the show's durability: its compelling structure. The first half of each hour-long episode is classic police procedural in which "Law," personified in the first season by partners Greevey (George Dzundza--and be sure to catch the interview segment with series creator Dick Wolfe to learn how to pronounce his name) and Mike Logan (Christopher Noth, the future "Mr. Big" on Sex and the City) investigate a crime and make an arrest. The second half chronicles the ensuing trial, as prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty) and Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks) under the supervision of Steven Hill's Adam Schiff (more feisty and animated here than in later seasons).

Law & Order is also distinguished by its superb writing. Several episodes take their inspiration from the headlines, including "By Hooker, By Crook" about a socialite-run call-girl ring, and "Indifference," which recalls the tragic Lisa Steinberg child abuse case. Others deal with such hot-button issues as abortion ("Life Choice") and AIDS ("The Reaper's Helper"). Another plus is the talent pool of character actors who lend their verisimilitude. Guest stars include Samuel L. Jackson and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Violence of Summer"), The West Wing's John Spencer ("Prescription for Death"), Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon ("Subterranean Homeboy Blues"), and The Sopranos' Dominic Chianese ("Sonata for Stolen Organ"). --Donald Liebenson

Description

Law & Order is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed series in the history of television. For over a decade this Emmy Award-winning series has presented the investigation and prosecution of cases ripped straight from today's headlines. With a celebrated cast that includes Michael Moriarty (Along Came a Spider), George Dzundza (Basic Instinct), Chris Noth (Sex and the City), Richard Brooks (The Crow: City of Angels), Dann Florek (Law & Order: SVU), and Steven Hill (The Firm), and featuring such notable guest stars as John Spencer (The West Wing), Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City), William H. Macy (Fargo), Gil Bellows (Ally McBeal), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Red Dragon), and Christine Baranski (Dr Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas). Law & Order: The First Year is a must-have DVD collection.

This was a gift for my father who is a Law and Order die hard. He loves the gift!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic season for a fantastic show.......2007-01-23

Sometimes the first season of a show isn't as good as subsequent seasons. Not in this case. The first season of the critically acclaimed drama features great acting, great writing, and timely stories. The show was not afraid to tackle sensitive topics like race relations, abortion, and AIDS. In fact, the topic matter nearly got the show cancelled after the first season. Sponsors were pulling out because of the subject matter. According to [...] Wolf's interview for this DVD set, the only person at NBC who didn't want the show cancelled was then-president of the entertainment division, the late Brandon Tartikoff. Good call, Brandon.

George Dzundza would quit the show after this season because he didn't want to move his family to New York. Too bad, he and Chris Noth had excellent chemistry. Michael Moriarty's performances can at times be overdramatic, but he did a good job as EADA Ben Stone.

The only drawback to this season is the sixth episode. The show's pilot (filmed in 1988 for CBS and rejected, bet they wish they had that one back) airs as the sixth episode. All of a sudden, Max Greevey is slimmer and has a affinity for cigars. Also, there is a completely different DA. In addition, some parts of the episode are clearly overdubbed. It isn't enough to take away a star, but it is annoying. Nevertheless, the first season of "Law & Order" is fantastic. This DVD set is a highly recommended purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-11-10

I had never seen the first year of Law and Order and really enjoyed watching the episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Give credit where credit is due!.......2006-07-09

I am a late comer to LAO but now watch it and its spin offs during the regular season when not competing with newer programs as well the marathons on TNT or USA. One can not watch all of them there are too many, but this is one of the cutting edge programs with great camera work also. Has the look and sound of classic New York police shows (gritty). The camera is generally still and wide-angled unlike the more recent TV dramas with the "in-your-face" look and hand-held movement made popular by NYPD Blue. The first season tackled social ills most programs didn't touch since Hawaii Five-O [desperately needed to be released to DVD by Paramount]. For one season, 22 episodes is impressive. Now networks call 6-8 shows a "season". True crime drama fans must have this.

5 out of 5 stars New collector of L&O DVDs.......2006-03-31

I'm new to the L&O DVD Collecting hobby.

"Law & Order: The First Year" is a must-have for your TV DVD collection. It includes people who would later appear in the incarnations of the L&O franchise: Dann Florek (who would later be a part of L&O:SVU), and S. Epatha Merkerson (who would later join the cast of L&O in Season 4).

Overall, the episodes are great and I can't wait to purchase Season 2!

"This story is enormously unlikely." --Elaine Pagels, Professor of Religion, Princeton University

Pagels is right on the mark: what began two millennia ago as a Jewish sect has grown into the most widespread religion in history, despite unbridled oppression in its early years and countless denominational splits ever since. The last few years have seen a resurgence of interest in church history, and A&E's documentary Christianity: The First Thousand Years is a splendid example of solid scholarly research meshed with entertaining production values that speaks to this interest. The result is a resource with equal appeal for the historian and the theologian alike.

The issues that confronted the early church seem now quite strange since there are 2,000 years of tradition behind them today:

Most of these issues were solved at the Council of Nicaea and at other early church councils--though authority of the papacy at Rome is a persistent divider both between the Eastern and Western churches and between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. Christianity: The First Thousand Years provides background and the original perspectives that led to the East-West split--a split whose basis we hardly question today.

The rapid spread of the church from the controversial conversion of Constantine to the conquests of Otto is tied closely to the history of the Roman Empire itself. Without the empire as its catapult, it is unlikely that Christianity would have spread even to remote Iceland and Finland by the year 1000. The early church modeled itself structurally on imperial institutions, and it integrated itself into the fabric of imperial life. Indeed, the central role of Christianity in Byzantine life is one of numerous often-overlooked but fascinating historical perspectives that A&E manages to cover here.

The four-part set features Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, whose unusual but pleasant voices will be well known to viewers of A&E's TV series Mysteries of the Bible. Like the TV series, Christianity: The First Thousand Years is marked by thorough scholarship, including interviews with many highly regarded scholars such as Pagels. Snippets of these interviews are interspersed with photography from the Holy Land and some reenactments, leading to an informative and revealing exploration of the early church. --Erik J. Macki

3 out of 5 stars OK for new students of Christianity and those who want a fast refresher/overview.......2007-06-12

I don't think that the producers did their homework as well as they should have. The early Church could have been covered more thoroughly and accurately. For example, although the producers interviewed a Greek Orthodox priest, the DVD does not really discuss the Schism of 1054 between the Orthodox and Catholics. Such a split is a very important one and thus should be explained with more reasons than only the political problems of the Roman Empire. I do give credit to the producers for attempting to summarize 2000 years of Christian history, though. After all, squeezing so much history on to two DVDs must be quite the challenge that facts are bound to be omitted. This DVD would be an OK introduction to people who know little about Christianity.

4 out of 5 stars really good, not great.......2007-05-13

I learned a great deal of history through the 400 minutes of video in this series, and I thought I already knew a lot! I liked it overall and I think it's something that everyone should watch. My only complaints were that there are a couple of times that they weren't completely accurate, or mispresented something, such as making it seem like the canonization of the books of the Holy Bible were done hastily at the demand of an Emperor.

I also wish that there were more acted out scenes. Through most of the video you're looking at artwork or scenery, and it's not always pictures of what they're talking about, which was weird.

Still... my rating is a 4 because I think it was really good, just could've been better.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-01-21

It was nice to watch an objective look at the first 2 millenia of Christianity. There are no punches pulled here. There is no glorification of the religion; it is an honest look at the largest religion in the world, from its beginning to current day. It does not make Christianity look bad, nor does it make it look good. If you are looking for an unbiased look at the history of the church, buy this.

3 out of 5 stars wonder program poor production.......2007-01-06

sadly this is wonderful program, but A & E dvd do not work all dvds and there is defects with in the dvd. I have decirded to live with them, but for this price I paid it was not right. A & E/history channel knew that not all dvd players can use their dvds and they do not put waren so people know that is possble not going to work. This is wonderful program and i love it, but dvd was not good. They clear do not care to treat all custmers rightly.

1 out of 5 stars Not accurate.......2006-12-19

I am a professor and a student of theology and the history of Christianity. This is one of the worst movies on the subject out there. Interesting that the writers attempt to discuss the history of the first 1500 years of the church without talking to a single Catholic...not one. Note to you...there was no Christian Church other than the Christian Church for the first 1000 years.

Over and above that, they go on to talk about how James...not Peter...was the head of the church after Jesus left. Well, that is wrong too, and they offer no proof for it at all.

All and all, one of the worst movies on the subject ever.
