Description

Jethro Tull is one of the most successful British acts of all time with a career reaching from the late sixties to the present day. In 2003 they made their first (and so far only) visit to the Montreux Festival. Split into a semi-acoustic first half and a full on electric second half, the concert was a triumph combining newer songs such as "Dot Com", "Pavane" and "Budapest" with classic favorites. As ever Ian Anderson leads from the front with his instantly recognizable voice and inimitable style of one-legged flute playing.

Tracklisting 1) Some Day The Sun Won't Shine For You 2) Life Is A Long Song 3) Bourée (Version de Noël) 4) With You There To Help Me 5) Pavane 6) Empty Café 7) Hunting Girl 8) Eurology 9) Dot Com 10) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 11) Fat Man 12) Living In The Past 13) Nothing Is Easy 14) Beside Myself 15) My God 16) Budapest 17) New Jig 18) Aqualung 19) Locomotive Breath

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tull Video.......2007-09-17

After a few months anticipation my DVD of Tull: Live at Montreux arrived in my hands....to my suprise i felt a true concert experience right in my living room of Ian Anderson and Company and their par excellence of performing. If you are not a Tull fans so to speak, this would be a great introduction and would be a bonus if you indeed went to a live concert. As a Tull follower since 1969, and have experienced many concerts of Tull over the years, this DVD is certainly worth it for anyones collection. Great work.

Jethro Tull: Live at Montreux

very very nice recording of a latter day tull concert. being a 30+year fan i was a little skeptical of this disc. i actually saw a show a few weeks after this in the states my most recent one. sometimes a show is not as good a listen as being there such the reason to attend live concerts especially with a band so late in their career.(tull however is one of the few bands which has never really put out a bad record) anyways its a great price the sound is great and though the song selection is redundant it is a nice addition to the library.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic video of Tull onstage in '03.......2007-09-04

Jethro Tull is one such act where the same kind of break-neck energy found within the tattered fringes of punk rock co-exists inside virtuoso instrumentation and arrangements. Singer-flautist-co-founder Ian Anderson loves the art of adding several notes of flute and voice at the drop of a sage's hat, and his tendency for ad-libbing can seen and heard on the new DVD, "Jethro Tull -- Live at Montreux 2003," released by Eagle Rock Entertainment.
"Jethro Tull music has always retained a degree of improvisation," the 60-year-old Anderson told me on the telephone recently. "Even structured music has space for improvisation. All members of the band have an opportunity to change notes, and that's always fun."
Led by Anderson and longtime guitarist Martin Barre, Tull sounds tremendous throughout the new DVD, which will shoot shivers of excitement through the faithful and uninitiated alike, both with acoustic numbers and electric guitar-driven tracks.
Anderson selected a near-perfect set list for the new live DVD. It shows the way he and Tull inject adrenaline and inspiration into 19 of their most beloved tracks on the new DVD, which also is available as a double-compact disc set. As the DVD plays, it's little surprising that "Living in the Past," "Aqualung," "Locomotive Breath," "Empty Cafe" and "Life is a Long Song" sound so relevant and feisty, even though the bulk of the video's tracks were first recorded in the late 1960s and 1970s. Bassist Jonathan Noyce, drummer Doane Perry and keyboardist Andrew Giddings round out the quintet as Anderson rotates between flute and acoustic guitar.
"I try to be inventive with time signatures when writing, and there's new pieces of music that tests the limits of the musicians, which is exciting," Anderson told me. "I'm just grateful for people to give us something of a chance live, and to want to see a one-legged flute player."
Equipped with one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in all of rock music, the song "Aqualung" builds in intensity and the punchy "Fat Man" is ironic without ever being too aware of itself. Yet it's the quieter moments on the DVD, particularly the perfect, should-have-been-a-No.1-hit "Budapest" and the holiday-themed "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Bouree (Version de Noel)," that hit the deepest. Framed by Anderson's acoustic, appropriately crystal-like guitar playing, "Budapest" is a prime example of how Tull weaves classical influences into blues, folk and Mediterranean sounds. The track originally appeared on Tull's 1987 album, "Crest of a Knave," which edged past the gamblers' favorite, Metallica's "... And Justice for All," to win the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album Award in 1988.
Check out this DVD. They might not play with quite the fire they had in 1972, but they have a lot of energy and class left in them.

4 out of 5 stars Great Performance dvd.......2007-08-27

This is Tull's best dvd effort. Superb audio and video, in my opinion. Ian Anderson may be the most under-rated rock icon out there. He is tops in my book (even when he says some off-color things.....which he always does). I'd love to sit in a living room with Ian for a couple of hours and talk. I bet he's got stories and insights that would keep you totally captivated. Also, it was wonderful that Tull included a song from the old "Benefit" album. "Benefit" is a great, and yet, over-looked masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars Strange set list and a disjointed performance.......2007-08-27

It's always great to get the opportunity for new Tull footage so I can see why the other reviews are so positive. The DVD production values are
excellent. There are some strange moments for me, which seem to center around the drumming and timing. Hard to articulate but for me the group just seemed "off" at times. "EMPTY CAFE" was a highlight for me...instrumental off Martin's solo album. It was nice to see that on the DVD. I am not real pleased with the performance on the DVD and upon reading between the lines in the liner -notes maybe Ian Anderson wasn't either.?

Description

Yes is one of the most innovative and successful rock bands of all time with a career that now spans five decades. In 2003 the band made their first appearance at the Montreux Festival, despite having a long association with the town itself (they recorded there frequently in the seventies). It was a triumphant night and is regarded by both the band members and fans as probably the finest Yes gig ever to be filmed. It has been much in demand and is now finally cleared for release.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome song line up.......2007-09-16

I saw these guys from the 3rd row back, in the round at the LA forum, during an anniversary concert. One of the best concerts I've attended. I didn't know what to expect when I received this DVD. I knew the original band was back but I had no idea how good this would be. I thought the usual hits would be played. I was wrong. "And you and I", one of my favorites was just beyond words. Wakeman was in great form, as was Anderson and the rest. There's nothing like Wakemans keyboard style. The song line up was very unique and perfect for true YES fans.

5 out of 5 stars Simply "The Best" Yes DVD.......2007-08-22

I am 54 years old and very picky. This is Yes without MTV type schmaltz. Not too much dubbing. Not too much glitz. Perfect. This is about the music. Safe selection of songs. Voice is not perfect.....kind of like an actual concert. This is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Great video; extremely poor sound.......2007-08-06

I don't know if it's a production glitch (as in a DVD production defect), but the sound levels in this in DVD fluctuate so much as to be completely distracting and (at times) flat-out annoying. Sometimes the sound of the overall mix rises and falls, while in other places one particular instrument comes across really in-your-face in the overall mix.

That said, the video quality is good. It is well-shot, and the performance itself is... well, Yes! They've never disappointed me in a performance. The sound thing should have been fixed when they mastered the thing though... that bugs me.

5 out of 5 stars A Good DVD for Yes fans.......2007-07-30

A nice recording of the band at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The sound quality is really good, and the light show was impressive. The band was definitely "on" that night, and they seemed to be having a great time. Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman both had cool solo segments, with Steve Howe playing an interesting version of To Be Over on guitar. It seemed like it was a special night for the band, like they weren't treating the concert as just another show. They seemed to have a little extra juice, if that makes sense.

The camera work was really good as well. Nice variety of shots and angles and none of the silly graphics that have marred other releases, or excessive changes in shots that can make some over-edited concert videos difficult to watch. If you're a Yes fan you'll like it.

1 out of 5 stars Original lineup????????.......2007-07-29

I haven't seen this yet so I can't rate it but I keep reading all these reviews and everyone keeps mentioning the original line up. The first two albums were the original and best line up and we haven't seen them since. Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman are great but Peter Banks and Tony Kaye help create the Yes sound and Steve and Rick are mere imitators. Bring back Peter Banks then we'll see some real Yes.

5 out of 5 stars Rory Kicks Butt.......2007-09-13

This three DVD set is excellent overall. The only issue is that the vocals and the videos were out of sync on part of disc 2 and 3. Other than that, the video quality was excellent and sound was excellent. If you are a fan, this is a must have set.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Roryness.......2007-08-23

OMG --- When I got Rory at Montreaux I thought it was great (it was/still is), but when I put this Rockpalast DVD on and was totally captured and enthralled by his opening acoustic performances, I knew I was in for a treat, and man did it treat. This is why I loved live rock shows when I went to them back in the day, and why I still buy them 30 years later. All reviews will note Rory's energy and happiness in this set of performances because it is apparent. It is a bit raw, to be expected with 30 year old recordings, but it does not matter, its plenty good enough on a 5.1 system. The concerts are all great, with one slightly low point being a jam with Eric Burdon which just never really gets going (it has its moments, but overall it's weak). But an incredibly high point is a jam with Jack Bruce at the end of DVD3. On a little backstage talk between Rory and Jack, it seems that they are going to return to the stage for an encore to play "Politician", and Rory seems to indicate he has no idea how it goes. Jack gives him the beat by way of a hum, and on stage they go. Rory starts with notes that indicate he does not know the song, but a few bars into it he "gets it" and then he may as well be Clapton. The look of glee on Bruce's face when he realizes Rory has it and goes heads up jamming with him is worth the price of the DVD alone to anybody who can appreciate the significance of the moment. A sure buy for any Rory fan --- and for anyone who does not know Rory's work but likes to explore rock guitarists. Get It!

5 out of 5 stars Buy This DVD.......2007-08-18

Other than Hendrix, Rory may be the most entertaining and underrated guitar player of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Got Montreux? You've GOT to have this, too!!!.......2007-08-17

If you've found your way to this page then you're enough of a Rory fan to absolutely appreciate this release - just buy it!

If you already own the Montreux set and are wondering if this is worth paying for, too - what the heck are you waiting for?! Just buy it!

Mine just came in earlier today and I'm loving it! The performances contained on these three dvds are, if anything, better than the Montreux shows. Rory is absolutely on fire throughout and his energy and pure joy of playing are on fine display here. I've been grinning from ear to ear the whole time I've been watching it!

From the packaging (liner notes, photos, etc...) to the actual performances, this is just an excellent purchase! The camera work is solid enough that you'll feel like you're right there, none of that herky jerky MTV style quick edits. Music-wise, well, it's just real live rock and roll courtesy of the great Mr. Gallagher!

Keep in mind that Rory's heyday was in a time when the technology wasn't what it is now. What you get here is the whole real deal, it's raw enough that you've got all the between song guitar tune-ups, feedback, distortion, microphone glitches, etc..that were inherent in the live setting of the day. Compared to the ultra-slick concert dvds put out by current artists, I'll take this any day!

The Montreux set is great and I'm thrilled to have it but, for my money, this is the even better release! Hats off to Donal Gallagher for doing such a loving/excellent job of managing Rory's catalogue! Product like this shows there's still hope for the music industry afterall.

Now, quit reading about it and buy it for yourself! Rock out!

5 out of 5 stars Really great set for the Rory Gallagher fan.......2007-08-07

I've only made it through the first of three DVDs so far, but the first disc is great. Yes, there are flaws in the videotape master (the shows, at least most of them, were shot on videotape and therefore will show some flaws, but this is the best these old videotapes will look. For some reason, it's much harder to clean up old videotape than it is old films. It's very enjoyable, despite the limitations of the technology back in the 1970s and 1980s. Gallagher's electric guitar playing is on fire on disc 1, and his acoustic, folky covers early on in the first set are unique and add color to Gallagher's stage presentation. It's too bad Gallagher was taken from the world too soon, and at such an early age. This collection is good. Fans need to pick it up.

Enjoy!

Almost 40 years after the band's original formation, Deep Purple is in fine form in They All Came Down to Montreux. The band's history is intimately connected with the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival (which also includes rock music), so it was only fitting that DP was invited to headline the closing night of the festival's 40th anniversary on July 15, 2006. On disc 1 of this two-disc set, DP's 100-minute Montreux gig is included in its entirety, and even those who prefer the band's earlier "Mark II" lineup (which included previous keyboardist John Lord and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore) will agree that this band can still rock your socks off. By the time keyboardist Don Airey launches a playfully jazzy prologue to the band's biggest hit "Smoke on the Water" (a song inspired by a spectacular fire that occurred while the band was preparing to record Machine Head in Montreux in 1971), DP has the packed Montreux in an arm-waving state of hard-rock bliss.

While it's obvious that lead singer Ian Gillan's voice is not what it used to be (he's obviously struggling with the high notes in "Highway Star"), he still makes it through the set with his vocal cords intact, and he's got stellar support from Airey, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, and guitarist Steve Morse (the latter joined DP in 1994), all delivering the kind of ace musicianship that can only come from years of diligent touring. Morse is especially strong in this concert, while Glover and Paice achieve a flawless symmetry of rhythm. And while this is essentially a "greatest hits" gig, the performance of tracks from DP's 2005 release Rapture of the Deep suggests that this band could be going strong for years to come, if fans don't mind the occasional misstep and a stage full of aging rockers with expanding waistlines. As a bonus feature, 25 minutes of band interviews are also included. Disc 2 features an hour-long gig from London's Hard Rock Café, recorded earlier in 2006. With the exception of two tracks ("I Got Your Number" and "Fireball"), it's a shorter version of the Montreux set-list, more intimate in its club setting, but equally indicative of Deep Purple's impressive longevity. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Few bands are more closely associated with Montreux than Deep Purple and there was simply no other contender when it came to choosing the act to headline the closing night of the 40th Montreux Festival in 2006. The band duly delivered one of their finest live performances, sprinkling songs from their latest album "Rapture Of The Deep" through a set chock full of their classic tracks. There was even a brand new song "Too Much Fun" written especially for the occasion and, of course, a show-stopping performance of "Smoke On The Water".

A companion CD with highlights from this show is being simultaneously released.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Purple Live at it's Best.......2007-09-05

I have been a Deep Purple fan for over 25 years and own many records, cds and dvds of them in concert. This particular dvd is one of their best period. Whenever Deep Purple plays at Montreux, it is bound to be a special event, and this show lives up to any expectation anyone could have. The band is tight w/ all their arrengments yet loose enough that they can improvise on some of their most known and popular songs and maintain the essence of what Deep Purple has always been. Steve Morse's guitar playing is immpecable, presice and fluid. Don Airey had some big shoes to fill w/ the departure of Jon Lord, but he shows on this dvd that he is on par w/ any keybord player in the history of rock music (as well as classical and jazz). Ian Gillan's legendary voice still rocks like it did when he first sang about the Montreux Jazz Festival back in '71. Ian Pace and Roger Glover show us why they still are one of the best drum and bass combos ever. In short, if you are a Deep Purple fan you will like this dvd. After all, can the 40th Anniversay of the Montreux Jass Festival get any better then Deep Purple headlining it?

5 out of 5 stars Nice - (2) DVD set .......2007-08-15

Best live jam band ever. I must have 9 or 10 live versions of "Smoke On the Water" on DVD. Every live performance is a little different and has a charm of it's own. I love em all.

Now I must say, I held back on buying this one. Well I held off on Perihelion too, but I just had to get Jon Lord's last performance on DVD. Now, he is gone? Another loss like Blackmore? OK, I bit and ordered "They All Came Down to Montreux". Don Airey is one hell of a keyboard player, maybe not up to Lord's standard, but who is? Ian Gillan is getting a little long-on-the-tooth, but the old fart can still carry a tune pretty dang good. Hey, these guy's are about my age, so I grew up with DP - got "Hush" on a 45. Speaking of "Hush". They did the BEST "Hush" version on this DVD I've heard.

It's taking them a little longer to warm up these days, but by the time they get to "When A Blind Man Cries" the groove sets in. The two guest stars they brought in towards the end of the set were awesome.

The bonus DVD, well another hour of DP live. I can't argue with that. So, what your getting is about (3) hours of DP in concert in total. Sweet.

The quality is outstanding. I didn't get the HD-DVD version, but the standard DVD is pretty close to HD standards. really!

If you like DP, they got a bunch of great DVD's for sale. They are getting on with age so if that's a problem for you, buy some of their earlier stuff first. Then when you still want that DP fix, get this one too. Add it to your collection, you will play it many times over in the future.

I couldn't wait to watch this! But, I was kind of disappointed. While musically this album was good, I can't help but miss the old Deep Purple with Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord. This wasn't the group I remembered. To me they just didn't seem to have it anymore---that hard driving sound that made them famous. Oh please, Smoke on the Water (on the Live at Montreux DVD) almost put me to sleep! I loved the group, but please, it's time to retire...

5 out of 5 stars Old Geezers Deliver.......2007-06-28

This as good as it gets in modern DVD concerts, and it's getting there with one of the classic hard rock/metal bands in history. The video and sound is incredible, a real treat on my simple 5.1 system with HiDef monitor.

For a bunch of old farts, DP still kicks some serius arse. I think Ian Gillan even blows a nut trying to sing Highway Star (and quickly runs back stage to re-group during the following instrumental). The band is spot on, all night, as Gillan joins mainstays Roger Glover, and Ian Paice, in addition to Don Airy on Keyboards and Steve Morse keeping the Blackmore feel alive.

Excellent video editing, no flashing MTV 2-second bull crap here. The camera's pointing where it should, especially during solos, and stays there. The band is having fun, it's obvious throughout the concert, and you'll have fun following along with a bunch of old geezers rocking out to your heart's delight.

What I would have given to see this show. Montreaux is a small venue, with not a bad seat in the house. The stage was set to allow all of the musicians to be featured. If you have ever been to a Yes show, you know that at some point in the show, each musician is going to have the stage to himself and play a solo. Each does, and they are still at the top of their craft, after all this time. While the show started slow, and there were a few pieces that they played that I was not familiar with, by the end (And You and I) I was standing and shouting IN MY OWN LIVING ROOM--it was 1976 all over again! This was the best concert video that I have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Rory Review.......2007-08-09

Wow: what can I say. Rory Gallagher(as underated as he is)was great in live concert setting. If you want to see raw footage, great guitar playing and over all excellent live performance check out this DVD. It is loaded with great music, great performance and rare look into one of the most underated guitar players of his time.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny and then some........2007-07-15

I really can't believe that this pair of DVDs is sold so cheap considering the amount of quality material you get. Two discs of the best guitarist to ever come out of Europe doing what he does best. There's really no reason to NOT get this set, along with the exemplary Irish Tour DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Smiling.......2007-06-17

I just received my copy two days ago. Fans reading this review know that most people you tell about Rory have never heard of him. When I play his music for them especially live, the responses are "Wow!" "Where did you hear about him?" "Unbelievable" "You actually saw this guy in concert?" Now they can too. Over 4 and a half hours for about the price of a CD (bought when it was offered for $17.49).
.

Rory was the most charming, exciting, enthusiastic, and entertaining musician I ever saw perform. Read other reviews for a breakdown of his individual performances however taken as a whole, this concert DVD is by far the best I have experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Stand Up Guitar done Right.......2007-05-30

Been a Gallagher fan for 35 years and the only time I had seen him was on the old "In Concert" TV series. After seeing the discs (there are two) I am blown away all over again. There is something about seeing a man and his instrument doing what they were meant to do. And as for anyone complaining about his vocals, I think he did agreat job-sincerity trumps styling everytime. For several hours of rock and blues done by a master, one can't go wrong here. The music may seem dated to younger ears but if you are looking for a taste of real rock like you remember, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for.......2007-04-09

I am sorry to say I never got the chance to see Rory before his untimely death. Well now you can see him at 3 different stages of his career. It would have been nice if they could have captured the bands high energy level in the studio but they never did. Live is where Rory and his bandmates excelled. This DVD is great and if you like Rory's music buy this ASAP. If you like blues driven rock you will not be disapointed. Enjoy!

Description

Deep Purple in 1972 were reaching the height of their success, with hit singles and albums worldwide. Into this heady atmosphere they delivered one of the most famous rock albums of all time, 'Machine Head'.

1972 saw them premier the new album at concerts in Europe, Japan and America (with no fewer than six tours there that year), delivering the powerful new 'Machine Head' set. It was a concert in the Danish capital of Copenhagen that the first (and only) full film of the famous Mk 2 line-up presented here was made, and is now available on DVD for the first time.

Recorded March 1, 1972, it was originally filmed by Danmark Radio, Denmark's national radio and television station. The actual black and white footage was never screened in full and ended up lying dormant in the company's vaults.

The tour continued through to 1973 when Deep Purple returned to America, selling out more shows and shifting more albums than they had ever done. A camera crew turned up to film the group in New York in May for the 'In Concert' show, and this is also released here for the first time in glorious color (on any format), including the only performance of the line-up doing 'Smoke on The Water'. LINEUP:
Ritchie Blackmore: Guitar
Ian Gillan: Vocals
Roger Glover: Bass
Jon Lord: Keyboards
Ian Paice: Drums

3 out of 5 stars Only for die hard MK II fans..........2007-08-23

...I know that true Deep Purple fans won't like to hear, but...this DVD proves what many reviews over the years did have to say.
The concert footage on this DVD shows one thing very clearly: that the classic MK II line up was not one band, but a band plus a guitarist. You can say about Ritchie Blackmore what you like, but he was NEVER a team player. And this shows very clearly in all performances contained here. We see Paice, Gillan, Lord and Glover playing aside a guitarist named Blackmore. There is no such thing as one band. The live album "Made in Japan" already suggested this, but here we get the final proof. Actually, as a later born and raised with classic albums such as In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head, I was rather disappointed. Not only did Blackmore's performance not match with the rest of the band's playing over large parts of the show, but also Gillan's screaming (could not rate this as singing even under hard and heavy standards) gave me one or the other shudder. So, if you want to hear my (juvenile) advice, stay to the original albums and not waste your time with this one. It may destroy whatever image you have of this classic rock band. Everything else seems more nostalgy than real criticism.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music, Bad Camera Work In Spots.......2007-07-31

The set list is tremendous and seeing the boys from their heyday in 1972 - 1974 is just awesome. The major complaint concerning this DVD concerns the camera work. For the first four or five songs of the Denmark show, the director must have been tripping. When Blackmore launches into a solo, the camera lingers on Gillan, then catches a bit of Glover, then back to Gillan, etc. Later on there is great footage of Blackmore and Lord soloing, and the camera work during Ian Paice's drum solo is superb - as is the solo itself. My God! How does anyone move sticks that fast?

Well worth buying, but be prepared to curse a few times during the opening half-hour as you HEAR Blackmore but don't see him.

5 out of 5 stars No Purple but still stunning in black and white! A must own!!.......2007-06-10

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

The opportunity for those that were too young to see the most well respected line-up of Deep Purple (Mark II) as far back as circa 72/73 is something that you can't pass up. For those that have lost a bit of their hair but none of the zest for great rock and roll, you too will be blown away.

Don't let any of the negative connotations deter you from enjoying such a fantastic release. Even though the video is black & white it doesn't detract from the all out musical muscle Deep Purple contained. Certainly all of us want the camera to focus on Ritchie during the solos but the long time fan has known from day one that Blackmore is not exactly overjoyed with the presence of a photographer near him. Be thankful for the opportunity to experience a brilliant band in a creative period.

The critics that feel Ritchie Blackmore was all about flash haven't a clue about his ability. He can play a classically based solo in a heavy metal song. The notes he plays are so tasteful that it is with effortless motion one solo after another become memorable.

When you first play the DVD watch it straight through to fully absorb the energy and power of the band. After you have seen it a time or two focus in on a few songs. "Lazy" will show why Ian Paice is one of the most underrated rock drummers. His timing is terrific and he can play tasty fills on a wide spectrum of sounds. "Child In Time" is Ian Gillian's calling card. A song with such intense emotion you feel as if you are in the front row and your heart beat increases as the song builds to a crescendo. Jon Lord's improvisational technique is superlative during "Space Truckin." Mr. Blackmore will have your head spinning and ears wide open throughout the performance, however pay attention to the classic cover version of "Lucille." One of many great Blackmore attributes is the ability to take a great rock song and add his personal flavor but still pay homage to the tune. Long time fans of Deep Purple will understand the analogy from previous Ritchie interpretations of the Beatles-"Help", "Hush" from Joe South, and Donovan's "Lalena."

The final word is all of us should not be lazy and start to enjoy seeing Deep Purple as they were when the "Mark II" line-up ruled the rock and roll world.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"

3 out of 5 stars Camera! Action! Dissatisfaction!.......2007-04-10

The worst camera work ever. I fully agree with Francois Grenier: "Child in time" is ruined because of this. Blackmore plays a great solo, but all one can see is the rest of the band. Glover plays solo in "Fireball", but, again, these camera morons show somebody else. I still don't understand why the band did not include "Smoke on the water" into this show.
Would be much more pleasant to see than "Lucille". Ian Paice is, as always, in great form.

4 out of 5 stars Great Archive Stuff - a blast for the past!.......2007-03-09

One of the only DVDs with Ritchie Blackmore in the line up - so worth buying just because of that! (Deep Purple without Blackmore is just NOT the same - bit like Eagles without Don Felder I guess; you can always replace the guitarist with somebody skilled and competent, but you can't replace the magic.)
If you are a die hard Purple fan then buy this and add it to your archives. Plewase note that most of it is in black and white and the sound and vid quality is a bit spotty at times - but this is the early 70's so don't expect 21st century technology. All I can say is that it's a real pity more bands don't release old stuff like this.
If you are not a die hard Purple fan you will probably notice the imperfections. But for me personally, the "Machine Head" era line up of Gillian, Blackmore, Lord, Glover and Paice was my favourite and their live performances are energy filled, wonderfully executed and raw, so I really enjoyed this blast from the past. (They are all supurb musicians where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts! Guess that's the magic of a "group", when it works.)

5 out of 5 stars Dylanesque is Excellent.......2007-09-06

Almost better than the CD. I enjoy having the DVD playing on my computer while working, doing e-mail etc. The live nature seems to enhance the songs.

Excellent

5 out of 5 stars Get both..........2007-09-02

I would highly recommend getting both this DVD and the CD, as I did, since the latter will enhance your enjoyment of the former. I could be a bit biased though, since I've been a Ferry (and Roxy Music) fan for well over 30 years (and relatively recently had independenty re-discovered Dylan's body of work).

5 out of 5 stars Best Ferry ever!.......2007-08-24

I have said this to other Ferry DVD's, but this one IS THE BEST ONE! His voice has matured beyond his previous efforts, just gets better with age. I am not usually a huge Dylan fan, but I really like how Bryan delivered. They are the best versions of Dylan songs I have heard by anyone. I sent 2 other copies to friends; it was that good! Trust me, it's very enjoyable. The DTS surround is breathtaking, I am sure the Dolby surround and stereo is almost as good. It's a mature Bryan for sure!

2 out of 5 stars disappointing but not surprising.......2007-08-21

In the mid 70s Bob Dylan settled into a formula for live performances, something he recovered from only recently. The Rolling Thunder Review was typical of that time period. Everything was just a little more upbeat than it needed to be, seemed to be supported by a constant boom-CHUCKA-boom. His well known preference to never do a live performance that sounded like the orginal seemed to join with an urgency to get through the song. The result was always a little less than satisfying. Over the last 10 years, his recovery from illness and some decent studio albums transformed the man and his live performances have been much more substantive.

Bryan Ferry, whose treatment of A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall on his 1973 These Foolish Things album ranks among the best Bob Dylan covers ever, also got formulaic somewhere along the line. It used to be exciting to go to a 1970s Roxy Music concert, just to see what the performance would be like. But around about 1980 it got into a rut. The High Road video is a picture of the formula, symbolized by the row of backup singers swaying in unison.

I had high hopes for Dylanesque when I first read about it. If there would be one or two more Hard Rains in there, it would certainly be worth it. One day a package arrived from Amazon with the CD in it and the note "Don't think twice, it's alright". It had come from an old friend with whom I had attended some of those 1970s Roxy concerts.

His voice is great, his harmonica surprisingly good, but I was disappointed. This was not Bryan Ferry interpreting the songs, as Hard Rain had been. This seemed to be the Bryan Ferry of the 1980s formula emulating the formulaic Bob Dylan of the same period. There were a few memorable treatments, I particularly liked Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Make You Feel My Love and Baby Let Me Follow You Down, but nothing grabbed me and made me want to play it over and over again. I kept picturing those damn backup singers from The High Road swinging back and forth.

When the DVD arrived, I guess I should say that it met my expectations. It was no better or worse than the CD, in fact it is the studio musicians from the CD doing the album, more or less, in the studio without an audience. The backup singers, as envisioned, were there, doing their imitation of their High Road predecessors. boom CHUCKA boom. I fast forwarded some of it.

It wasn't just Bob Dylan material that made These Foolish Things a masterpiece. Smokey Robinson's Tracks of My Tears and Brian Wilson's Don't Worry Baby both outshine anything on Dylanesque. Bryan Ferry has some good covers in there waiting to come out, he just needs to think outside the formula.

Bryan Ferry is the consumate matinee idol, his heart breaking under his lapel and this captures his very essence.

Outgoing (as of 2007) British Prime Minister Tony Blair, a onetime rock musician and promoter, once said that if he could sing like Paul Rodgers, he might never have entered politics. Whether that would have been music's gain and Parliament's loss is debatable, but Live in Glasgow is further evidence that Rodgers is a worthy role model. While he went on to stardom and the commercial big time with Bad Company and the Firm (with Jimmy Page), and more recently fronted the re-constituted Queen in Freddie Mercury's stead (a strange pairing that worked well nonetheless), many would argue that Rodgers' best band was his first: Free, the late '60s-early '70s blues-rock quartet that was a model of spare soul combined with a melodic pop sensibility, with Rogers' vocals leading the way. Rodgers apparently agrees; no less than nine songs in this 80-minute concert are drawn from the Free catalogue, including not only their one big hit, "All Right Now," but also a number of more obscure but still excellent tunes like "Wishing Well," "I'll Be Creepin'," and "Be My Friend." His band, too, does a pretty decent job of reviving the Free spirit; guitarist Howard Leese, formerly of Heart, fairly channels the late Paul Kossoff on several solos, albeit with less restraint. There are four songs from the Bad Company era ("Can't Get Enough" and "Feel Like Makin' Love" are among them, natch) and just one, "Radioactive," from the Firm (probably no coincidence, as that band was neither Page's nor Rodgers' finest moment). But this is all about the singer, who, if anything, has improved with age. Rodgers can belt the blues, but never goes overboard; he can deliver plenty of grit and passion, but has an appealing tender side as well. And "Warboys," the one new song featured here, indicates that while Tony Blair may be done, Paul Rodgers is still a ways from the end of the road. --Sam Graham

Description

His resume reads like a rock fan's wildest dream: frontman and main songwriter for FREE (founded with the late guitarist Paul Kossoff), BAD COMPANY, THE FIRM, SOLO & QUEEN. Paul Rodgers has been electrifying audiences since he hit #1 with his worldwide hit "All Right Now" co-written with Free. After six years with FREE, Rodgers formed BAD COMPANY with Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs. As the main songwriters they wrote all of the platinum records and #1 hits. While moving forward as a solo artist he took a slight detour and formed THE FIRM with LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page. He then continued as a solo artist and received a Grammy Nomination for his "Muddy Water Blues" CD on which he wrote the title track. In 2005 he joined forces with QUEEN and toured worldwide at QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS performing songs from both of their catalogues. He is currently proceeding on two fronts with QUEEN and as a solo artist. In '07, he will play ten exclusive US dates this spring and one summer date in Holland. For a man who prefers to keep a low profile, his talent still shines brightly.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Rogers just keeps on keeping on!.......2007-09-14

This along with the many other DVDs and CDs that Paul Rogers keeps on putting out is a great live concert with a very good band. I've seen him in person on this tour and really enjoyed it. I'm glad I have this DVD to remember the tour. He has a really good 18-year-old guitar player with him which makes this band a little different than what he is used to playing with. Highly recommended. Well produced and great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Rodgers: Live in Glasgow.......2007-09-05

Paul Rodgers can belt out a song, no two ways about it! His sometimes gravely, sometimes velvety voice has always had the power to move me deeply, and it still does in Paul Rodgers: Live in Glasgow. Included are songs from Free, Bad Company (my personal favorite), and The Firm, as well as, his solo career. For classic rock followers or anyone wanting to hear just plain ol' good music and watch a rock legend master at work, I highly recommend this DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Defective printing?.......2007-08-14

I have ordered this DVD twice - each time from different vendors - and each time my copy had the same defect. The picture keeps distorting and the sound skips, and it seemed to be in the same place on each copy.
Am I having very bad luck in trying to get a good copy or are others finding this also?

5 out of 5 stars Great! Great! Great!.......2007-08-01

What's not to like? Pure Rock! Live American rock is great, but one can't ignore that peculiar, not-miss-a-beat sound that British musicians master so perfectly on stage as well. Get it! You won't regret it. It's worth every penny. This will surely be a collectors item soon. Mr. Rodgers shines, and glows with those magnificent vocal treasures he possess. Excellent musicianship by all members in the band as well; including the kid. The sound mix is perfect too. You don't need to raise the volume or adjust anything in your surround system. It's so well balanced that it allows you to appreciate perfectly every note and every instrument played. Watching the close ups on the dual Les Paul attacks sent shivers down my spine. This is the pure, unique Les Paul sound at its finest. Packed with pure Rock from beggining to end this is surely the best rock DVD this year.
