Only strange days such as these could have made possible The Axis of Evil Comedy Tour, a showcase for four Arab-American comedians telling jokes about life for people of Middle Eastern descent in the United States in the aftermath of 9/11. A mostly Arab-American audience thoroughly enjoys Dean Obeidallah's monologue, in which he describes his homeland as Eastern Palestine, i.e., New Jersey. He also says "Obeidallah" translates as "Servant of Allah," which does not sit well with airport security. In general, he has a few choice things to say about such extreme safety measures as the Patriot Act: "Are the guys in Al Qaeda really going to libraries and reading books? Maybe Chicken Soup for the Terrorist Soul?" Dapper comic Ahmed Ahmed talks about his own travails trying to fly with a name like his: "I Googled my name and it matches a known terrorist in the Middle East. Right now I think he's Googling me--'Hey, there's an American comedian with my name.'" Ahmed talks about the modern life of a Muslim: "You know you're a Muslim when you drink and have sex but don't eat pork." Aron Kader has fun describing his mixed background as the son of a Palestinian dad and a Mormon mom: "When I turned 19, the Mormons asked me if I wanted to go on a mission. I said, 'Is that different from a Palestinian mission? Because you don't come back from those.'" Kader also recalls his trip to Jordan shortly after 9/11: "I was driving with my cousin, who was cursing the U.S. but asking if I wanted to grab some lunch at Burger King or McDonald's."

Finally, Maz Jobrani is very funny explaining that Iranians are not actually Arab at all but ethnically white, and that while Arabs speak swfitly and aggressively, Iranians speak slowly and cheerfully, "like they're on heroin." Jobrani describes his nightmare with Hotmail after writing a terrorist joke to a friend via email: "I called Microsoft, and they transferred my call to an operator in Iraq, who reminded me there's a war on and asked me what I wanted." All four entertainers have excellent sets, and each carries the same serious message layered between gags, i.e., anti-Muslim prejudice in America is really hurting millions of innocent people. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Even funnier than on Comedy Central.......2007-08-07

If you've seen the Axis of Evil on Comedy Central, you should know they cut out about 20 minutes of the show in order to fit it into a 1 hour time slot. What got left on the cutting room floor ranged from inconsequential bits to some segments that were actually pretty funny. When you watch the full length show, it's fall-on-the-floor hilarious.

Aron Kader is the weakest of the comics, but he's still pretty good. The strongest are Ahmed Ahmed and Maz Jobrani with Dean Obeidallah somewhere in the middle. These guys are exactly what we need right now: laughter and humour aimed at our current neurosis, terrorism.

You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Great - very funny!!!.......2007-07-15

This was a great purchase - just stumbled onto it and wanted to check it out. Very funny - I have since bought extra copies to give as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars AXIS of Pure Reality Laughter.......2007-07-15

Since the Blue Collar team, it was a challenge for me to find a team that could bring laughter on everyday facts of life. The Axis team brought a new perspective on being a part of middle-eastern heritage and the effects of post 9/11. Although the quad team touched on certain sensitive issues on eating pork, national security, Jews - it was done with a dosage just enough to let a sensible and logical person understand the challenges we face in today's society (with the flavor of humor). Among the quad team, in my opinion, Maz Jobrani and Dean Obeidallah are the cream-of-the-crop in the team. Especially Maz, he is totally hilarious. Although Ahmed and Aron are funny on their part, the delivery method or Maz and Dean are outstanding, fresh and at the same time provoking. This DVD will definately be in my permanant collection. This is money well-spent and entertainment worth watching (and listening to). 2-thumbs up + 2-big toes up!!!

4 out of 5 stars Some really great comeddy.......2007-07-14

OK, at the outset I have to say BUY ths DVD

But of the 4 performers, only 2 really shine.
Ahmed Ahmed and my personal favorite Maz Jobrani

The thing is they don't play on stereo types and they are not trying to defend Islam, and thats why their humor is so good.

Aron Kader was 4 star and Dean Obeidallah was dissapointing. Special features are not exciting either ... but Ahmed Ahmed & Maz shone through ...

Are you Iranian Or Persian? Gotta love that!

5 out of 5 stars good , clean humor.......2007-07-13

Although this dvd is ethnic humor, it is very entertaing and not insulting or rude.

Premise and title are the only elements this low-budget military drama shares with the 2001 Gene Hackman-Owen Wilson theatrical feature, but those seeking a dose of action won't be disappointed, despite the lack of on-screen star power. Nicholas Gonzalez (Resurrection Boulevard) and Matt Bushell star as Navy SEALs stranded in North Korea after a mission to destroy a nuclear plant is aborted; a brace of dependable character actors (including Keith David, Bruce McGill, and Glenn Morshower) debates with President Peter Coyote on the best plan of action to bring the troops home safely. Writer/producer/director James Dodson's approach may strike some as less than subtle, but he keeps the film's pace brisk and the action heavy, and yields some commendable results on what is clearly a limited budget. The DVD includes an audio commentary track by Dodson, as well as a pair of making-of featurettes and the original trailer. --Paul Gaita

1 out of 5 stars Horrific and Idiotic.......2007-08-29

This movie was just utterly horrible. The actors tried way too hard to look tough and the constant service bashing caused be to turn it off. Airborne School is the Army's toughest training? Give me a break. Try The Unit's Selection, the SF's Q-Course, or Ranger School. I couldn't get through half of the movie. If you want a real movie about SEALs, watch Tears of the Sun or even Navy SEALs with Charlie Sheen since that was actually written by a former Navy SEAL. And if you wanna learn what "clowns" Delta is, why don't you watch The Unit or read Not a Good Day to Die by Sean Naylor or better yet read Eric Haney's Inside Delta Force and see if you still believe the idiocracy of this movie. Their counter-ambush tactics they employed in this movie would make you think they were friggin weekend warriors. This isn't a B movie. It's a D movie at best. I'm gonna enlist in the Army and my friend's gonna enlist in the Navy for the SEALs and me and him have no problems what-so-ever. We support each other 100% and then some cause we know we'll be fighting the same war.

Or an overlay ---
Any movie that tells of what our Special Ops guys go through is worth watching -- even if the story line is not up to par.

There is not a complainer out there that would last in their shoes. sorry, boots.

This movie shows the emotions and humanity of our guys [not the bad ones] and yes, the one Korean who rescued? our guys turns out to be human after all.
McGill as General Vance led me to believe he was war hungry and determined to have his way. Coyote [love that name] as president did the General justice.

And the explanations in the commentary I truly believe: The President does not have all that much athority to make a move on his own. Only in times of War. So we should take a closer look at the men that surround him.

I could follow all the action and the whyfores and surely did not need the [shall I say demented] overlays of the frames that fluttered. Movement was just too quick. Seemed like a fill-in.

I enjoyed the actors even though I didn't know them - anyone that has the guts to jump out of a plane at that level has my admiration. [the real men, not the actors] but it was good realism.

Would love to see better quality of our guys exploits - be they Navy, Army, Marines or the undercover Special Ops groups. How about the SAS, they have some good ones too.

This movie is a personal likes one - will not suit all. But with understanding comes liking.

4 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever!.......2007-07-16

Behind Enemy Lines II: Axis of Evil sheds light (as it should do) on the inhuman Stalinist state of North Korea, a.k.a. the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (the DPRK); a country whose isolationism and harsh policies have led to the deaths of millions of its own citizens and which today continues to threaten peace and stability more than any other country in the world.
A group of Navy SEALs is called upon to parachute behind North Korean lines in order to blow up a nuclear missile site before the DPRK has launching capability.
As the team is in the process of being airdropped behind enemy lines, the mission is aborted, but not before half the team has already jumped off the plane...
The film starts off very well, immediately catching the viewers' attention.
Bruce McGill, Glenn Moreshower (from 24!), Peter Coyote, Keith David, and the rest of the older cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are yet again commendable! It is the younger actors who are not that wonderful in their respective roles.
More relevant than ever, the movie does a good job as an eye-opener to the darkest regime out there. The film provides the necessary background as well as an accurate, albeit short description of conditions in the DPRK.
Moreover, it could have been and it should have been much more graphic in showing what is really taking place in North Korea's "killing fields."
In short, the setting, the plot, the dialogues, the special effects, and the music are all very good!
Behind Enemy Lines II: Axis of Evil is a film very well written and very well presented, and it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

2 out of 5 stars Yet Another In-Name-Only Sequel: Equally Unique Political Background, Much Less Actions.......2007-03-27

Though it is a low-budget, in-name-only sequel to the Gene Hackman / Owen Wilson film made in 2001, "Behind Enemy Lines 2: Axis of Evil" has one new and bold idea that is certainly interesting. The newer film tries to employ the standard action flick formula against the recent political and historical background around and since the 1994 framework accord between North Korea and the United States. The film has even a neat twist in the story, which refers to the real-life event in 2004, a mushroom cloud that was allegedly witnessed in North Korea.

The story begins promisingly. It is about the mission of the Navy SEAL team to destroy a missile site found in North Korea. When they start to drop out of an airplane flying over the target area, however, the order to abort the mission arrives. The order came too late and four soldiers are left `behind enemy's line.' It is contrived, and considering the geography of Korea, jumping from the sky is too risky and highly implausible (going from the sea is much easier), but well, it is still OK.

Unfortunately the film goes downhill from there. The actions themselves are not bad, but they are poorly edited. Many reviewers (including me) are complaining about the shaky camera, but more problematic is the lack of suspense that was felt in the original "Behind Enemy Lines' or "BAT 21." Instead of giving the thrilling scenes of how US military headquarter communicate the isolated SEALS through the radio and other media, it shows us painful tortures, one old `taxi' and a bizarre car accident on the country road. Frankly I still don't see the point of the last two episodes.

The film also shows us the game of international politics in White House with Peter Coyote's US President and Bruce McGill's stereotyped general. During the discussion on the consequences of the attack on North Korea, Ambassador of South Korea shows up, but the names of Japan and China are not mentioned in this film, which is I think very strange.

Unlike other action flicks `like "Stealth," "Die Another Day" and, yes, "Team America: World Police," "Behind Enemy Lines 2: Axis of Evil" tries to incorporate real on-going events into action film. It's a bold step (especially when North Korea really announced its nuclear test in 2006), but still it must be said the film's story is weak, and actions need better choreography.

5 out of 5 stars movie is just as good as the first part.......2007-03-12

I Have no Idea what these folks talk about. movie is just as good as the first part and you'll never be bored till the last minutes. it's pure action with very good and accurate story and line. and about that handycam stuff, thas not annoying and that either helped movie to be a great action/war movie. I recommend it and Although it's not an oscar worthy movie like "Black Hawk Down" I gave it 5 stars to increase the rating. It's real grade is 4 stars.

      Description

AXIS OF EVIL is a powerful new documentary that asks a very fundamental question: What is evil? Interviews with 16 journalists, artists, scholars, and activists explore the concept of evil and how it has been used to justify political and military actions throughout the world. As the viewer will see, traditional "black and white" concepts of good vs. evil must be readdressed in an increasingly complex world. Against a backdrop of potent stamp art by 54 artists from 11 countries, the film challenges the mind and stirs emotions. At a time when governments distort the truth with empty rhetoric and flagrant manipulation of the media, the need for voices like those in AXIS OF EVIL becomes only greater.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars This documentary's thesis about evil becomes too broad when discussed and has less educational value as a consequence.......2007-02-19

This film begins by replaying George W. Bush's speech where he declared North Korea, Iran, and Iraq part of his "Axis of Evil." A professor from Barat College of Illinois, James J. Brask, said that the Bush's Axis of Evil speech was an "absurd formulation for American policy." Although Brask begins the discussion by focusing on Bush's speech, the filmmakers abruptly turn towards another issue: evil and racism. Filmmaker Floyd Webb and professor of law at the University of Chicago Geoffrey R. Stone comment on the problem of racism. Then another abrupt turn, professor Bernard Dohrn says that it is wrong that 11 million children in the richest country in the history of the world do not have healthcare. Her argument is that we need universal health care. Martha Nussbaum who elaborates on Dohrn's point by observing that Justice Marshall said in a dissent in a case in the 1970s that a right to a decent education is implicit in our freedom of speech, and she agrees that freedom of speech is just a phrase on paper unless citizens can actualize those freedoms.
Then, another abrupt turn, under the heading of "Criminal Justice" where it is said that the "United States currently incarcerates 2.1 million citizens or 686 per 100,000 of the national population: this is the largest prison population and the highest imprisonment rate. Almost 900,000 or 42% of US prisons are black men." Next, narrator, Warren Leming, says "In his first 2 years in office, Attorney General John Ashcroft overruled federal prosecutors 28 times in order to advocate the death penalty. In 95% of those cases the defendants were people of color."
Another abrupt turn begins when the panelists start discussing our torture tactics in places like Abu Ghraib. After showing many pictures of torture tactics at Abu Ghraib, the filmmakers showed a fake mail stamp with the heads of Mount Rushmore replaced with Rumsfeld, Hitler, Stalin, and George W. Bush."
The next heading begins with, "War." Howard Zinn discusses how, during his tour in the military, he unknowingly took part in the first experimental use of napalm. This section explores the notion of evil in the Cold War. The focus is on Vietnam. The narrator says, "Of the estimated 1.9 million Vietnamese killed in the Vietnam War nearly half were civilians."
Another abrupt turn is back to the beginning, with the heading of "Axis of Evil." James Weinstein says that Bush took Reagan's idea of the "Empire of Evil" and Roosevelt's idea of an Axis of German, Italy, and Japan. The editor of this film stupidly re-ran Brask's earlier video clip where called Bush's "Axis of Evil" and "absurd formulation..." Leming adds that "terrorism is the new communism."
Another abrupt turn is taken but without giving a phrase to begin it. This next section is how the media promotes the government's agenda of promoting fear and their own commercialization of news. This may be confusing political rhetoric because much of the conservative punditry argues that except for FoxNews, the news at large is liberal. But these liberals are arguing that because the news is run by corporate conglomerations they must have their own big-business agendas in mind and are actually pro-war conservative.

I thought this film would approach the topic of evil in a similar manner that Richard J. Bernstein approached it in his nice little book Abuse of Evil: The Corruption of Politics and Religion since 9/11 (Themes for the 21st Century Ser.). In some ways they overlap, but this film is largely just a liberal rant. This could have been a much better discussion of liberal politics if the director, Carmine Cervi, had asked more focused questions, asked for more historical examples to back up the claims made, and had given more statistics. This film is only 84 minutes so by talking about problems ranging from racism, to criminal justice, to the Cold War, to the Iraq War, to the War on Terrorism, this film becomes too broad and too unimportant educationally. The most accomplished intellectual to be interviewed was Martha C. Nussbaum, and she only spoke for about 2 minutes and she was answering a question that was almost irrelevant. She had the least air-time of the panelists yet is the most accomplished (along with Howard Zinn). This botched effort to utilize someone as diverse in ideas and scholarship as Nussbaum is a small example of the broader lack of coherence and focus that the director, Carmine Cervi, shows in this film.

5 out of 5 stars Axis of Evil: The Other Side of Prime Time.......2005-01-12

Producers Jim Swanson, Ilko Davidov, and Warren Leming (who narrates and composes) and director Carmine Cervi (plus a list which reads like a Who's Who of American activism) have all come together under the rubric "Axis of Evil" to produce one of the more extraordinary documentary essays yet seen.

The Axis of Evil project grew out of a book of stamp art. The film's graphics are drawn from the book and are stunning examples (from around the globe) of political satire. The DVD was designed by Carmine Cervi and Eric Burton, who did a superlative job animating the printed material. DVD extras include additional stamp art, histories, outtakes, and some fascinating anecdotal material.

Those interviewed include historians Daniel Ellsberg and Howard Zinn; the former Weather Underground leader Bernadine Dohrn, In These Times editor/publisher James Weinstein, media activists Peter Kuttner and Floyd Webb, and the University of Chicago's Martha Nussbaum and the ACLU's Geoffrey Stone. Physicist John Ketterson and sociologist Gerhard Schutte weigh in on the side of Liberal Science. Details of American Geo- Politic are outlined by political scientist and Vietnam veteran James Brask, and historian and Fulbright scholar James Barnhart. Lawyer and anti death penalty advocate Jane Bohman does a thoughtful job of presenting the case against capital punishment. Fisal M. Hammouda, a Muslim activist, and an advocate of inter-faith relations, considers the current situation within Islam.

To do justice to the range and depth of the film would be difficult. Axis of Evil mixes music, historical film footage, analysis, graphic art and narration to present the case against the rhetorical use of "Evil" as a State sponsored method by which opponents are demonized.

The use of "Evil" as a propaganda weapon can lead to a theological cum ideological fundamentalism: wherein those not of the "Faith" are deemed beyond protection. The charge of "Evil" has itself proved an evil. The documentary offers compelling evidence that the concept is both outmoded and harmful. The State promoted concept of "Evil" provides the basis for a media driven terrorism, whose rhetoric produces real Terror. The film examines the marginalization of dissent in the U.S. and the negatives this has produced globally.

The Bush administration has led the way in promoting a Good vs. Evil, Us vs. Them media climate in the United States. Their corporate media driven campaign has been effective, and independent media ventures like this one remain the exception. There have been few voices allowed a platform in opposition.

We stand at an historical cross roads in the United States. The real causes of the 9/11 debacle are considered here, in addition to the case for "Blow Back" so skillfully outlined by former CIA scholar/analyst Chalmers Johnson. Beset by a foreign war, which was ill-advised, ill-planned and fraudulently sold to an unwitting public, the U.S. has suffered a series of alarming insults to its prestige and power.

Currently overseen by an Administration, which has proven itself hostile to both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, we now begin to see the full dimensions of what may prove to be the end of a long Post War period of American dominance and the beginnings of a significant National decline.

The corporate media's lack of self-examination coupled with its inability to ask the hard questions produced much of the motive for this extraordinary piece of media analysis. You will not see these opinions presented in "Prime Time". To its credit the documentary avoids the conspiracy theories, which have proliferated since 9/11.

Writer Craig Vetter's poignant account of his father's death in the South Pacific during the Second World War is a compelling reminder that the U.S. has a long history which remains terra incognita. Activist Jim Swanson (executive producer) gives a detailed account of America's "Penal Colony" and the damage done when a Society chooses to punish rather than prevent.

Axis of Evil is an astounding piece of work and is all the more compelling for being one of the few pieces of analysis and advocacy available at a time when the U.S. stands in desperate need of some thinking that goes beyond Network Info-Tainment.

As citizens, not consumers, and as participants, not couch potatoes, we need more of what Axis of Evil presents: an unvarnished look at the United States in what may be the most crucial period of its history.
