Wonderful .......2006-02-04
The words and images are beautiful, and the information gives a broad understanding of many of the world's religions.
However, the show is 100 minutes long, not 50 as the description says.
Special program, worthy of viewing by young adults and adults.......2005-12-11
"A History of God" is a very special program reviewing the history of monetheism practiced by Jews, Christians and Muslims. It is fine synopsis of Karen Armstrong's incredible book by the same title, a work of scholarship with a narrative of some 399 pages. My transcript of the program from the DVD is just 30 pages -- a tribute to the incredible writing and editing by talent people who produced this program.
The following resource people appear in the program:
Karen Armstrong, Theologian, [Scholar / Historian] - Author of A HISTORY OF GOD; Rev. Alexander Golitzin, Priestmonk, Marquette University. Theology; Rabbi Irving Greenberg, Chairman U.S. Holocaust Memorial; Dr. Maher Hathout, Islamic Center of Southern California; Dr. E. V. Hill, Senior Pastor, Mt. Zion Baptist Church; Dr. Amina Beverly McCloud, Prof. Islamic Studies, DePaul University; Dr. Martin E. Marty, Professor, University of Chicago; Elaine Pagels, Professor of Religion, Princeton University.
Beginning with the story of Abraham, in the Hebrew Bible, the narration and commentary has been beauifully edited with a fine music score and excellent selected of visuals -- paintings, photographs, and video of scenes in the Middle East. Especially remarkable and appreciated are both the writing and editing of narration with the commentary - interviews with the scholars and theologians -- terrific transitions between narration and commentary.
This program would be especially useful for both young adults and adults -- from high school through college -- in religious study classes as well as public schools.

A MUST SEE.......2007-05-12
THIS DVD SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE IN ALL SCHOOLS SO THAT CHILDREN CAN LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THAT THESE THREE GREAT FAITHS ARE VERY SIMILAR AND RESPECT EACH OTHER'S TEACHINGS.ALL THE MISGIVINGS ABOUT THE FAITHS WOULD THEN BE SHED AND PROMOTE GREATER TOLERANCE AND UNDERSTANDING,PARTICULARLY IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES.
Worth seeing, but some caution warrented.......2007-01-02
I enjoyed this very much, and recommend that everyone see it. There were some important issues which received little mention if at all. This film tries to persue the laudable goal of how different faiths should approach one another in peace, however in order to do so, some key tenants of faith were abandoned. One of the theologins rightly mentioned that the key issue was "who is Jesus?" For the Jews and the Muslims to admit that Jesus was only a prophet is no stretch at all, but for the Christian, it is an abandonment of their faith. It is interesting that the only ones it seems who have to give up anything were the Christians. I wonder how the other faiths would have reacted if they would have been required to renounce one of the key tennants of their faith in the same way??? It was also interesting to see an Imam lead a group of children in an apparently christian church, through the conversion ritual to Islam, where all that is required to be a convert is to say "There is no god (Allah) but god (Allah) and Mohammed is his prophet." I wonder how it would have gone over, if a christian minister had gone into a Jewish or Muslim community, and asked them if they wanted to be baptised? The God of Abraham Issac and Jacob invites us to "come let us reason together..." and to the extent this film promotes that I applaud it, however a bit more candor in certain areas will be necessary in order for this dialogue to be more than a superficial sham...
Good documentary on the similarities.......2006-11-06
This is a good documentary pointing out all the overlooked similarities between the three religions. Some of the earlier posts who disagree with the title or other parts of the film is there own personal take on it. It has a heart-breaking moment in the middle with a speaker talking about a Muslim doing a killing. You'll have to watch the rest to see how that statement is unfolded. It is nice that it does not only talk to scholars, but students as well in high school and below.
The study guide is pretty good. Maybe a sequel to flesh out the differences between them more. It's good to know we have brothers and sisters throughout the world. shalom. salaam. peace.
A mistaken reviewer..........2006-05-04
I'll admit that perhaps the discussion of the three faiths is a bit oversimplified. Nevertheless it is just ignorant to boast that the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jesus, and Moses is not the God of the Muslims. In fact, the term Judeo-Christian is recently being reassessed as inapplicable and Judea-Christian-Islamic used in its stead. This is similar to the academic movement to use terms such as Before the Common Era (BCE) and Common Era (CE) as opposed to the overtly Christian CE/AD in terms of historical dates.
Our society needs to aknowledge that these forms of religious discrimination are closed-minded and historically innacurate. Adam, Noah, and Jesus and Mary are all figures within the Islamic historical tradition and this documentary illuminates such instances of likeness between the three faiths. That does not make it a weak film. It only directs us to reasses our weak intellects.
NOT the same God.......2006-04-27
This film makes a fatal assumption: that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (worshiped by Jews and Christians) is the same as Allah. In fact, they are two separate entities. What a pity this film doesn't make that point.

Economic in presentation but rich with intellectual and cultural dividends, this episode of Frontline makes Western understanding of the varieties of Islamic culture relatively easy. Essentially, Muslims maintains that the Muslim or Muslim-influenced societies of Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Turkey, etc., are no more uniform than the modern societies of the U.S., Spain, Poland, and Belgium--thus rendering generalizations moot. What is true, as we find in this program, is that Muslims everywhere face incompatibilities between Islamic principles and modernism. Muslims focuses on the degree of those incompatibilities, and what different nations in the Arab world and Asia are doing about it. Typically, Frontline's investigation is more street-level than abstract. We meet sundry sheiks and ayatollahs providing Koran-derived counsel and legal opinion for ordinary people, but we also meet Muslim men and women embracing both tradition and, say, Western tourism or professions for women. A fascinating and vital documentary promoting cultural understanding. --Tom Keogh

Total waste of money.....................2007-01-05
Don't waste your money, there are far more better documentaries that this one.
Beautiful Story not Examination of Depth.......2006-12-16
Beautiful story that touches base here and there around the world and unsurprizingly finds Muslims are people too with problems, and predictable variation in both practice and attitude toward other religions and the west. The film does not probe beneath the surface, clarify the belief system of Islam & whether that system is compatible with other belief systems, nor explore what the cumulative effect the religion of Islam may have on western civilization.
Strongly recommend Herb Meyer's "The Siege of Western Civilization" and "Islam: What the West Needs to Know" for those who desire to fathom the real issues that are past the politically correct aspects of probably most crucial topic of our time.
A documentary about contemporary Muslims.......2006-04-02
In preparing to teach Islam to undergraduates for the first time, I watched lots of videos on Islam, both to expand my own knowledge and to find good clips to show in class. This is one of the videos that I found most useful for both purposes.
"Muslims" is a 2002 documentary about the diverse ways of being a Muslim today. It consists mostly of stories of individual Muslims from around the world, including an Egyptian sheikh, an Iranian ayatollah, some Turkish students, a Turkish politician, a Malaysian obstetrician, a Malaysian woman seeking a divorce, several Nigerians, the principal of a Muslim school in the U.S., an African-American convert to Islam, and an advisor to the Iranian president. Along the way, the video addresses various issues in contemporary Islam, such as the fallout of Western colonialism in Muslim countries, Islamic law, women in Islam, Islamism, Islam and democracy, interpretation of the Qur'an, terrorism, and being a religious minority in the U.S.
Other videos I've found useful:
- "Inside Islam" (History Channel);
- "The Message," a movie about the life of Muhammad;
- "Inside Mecca" (National Geographic);
- "Secrets of the Koran" (History Channel).
Very Good.......2006-02-20
This is a good all around Dvd that shows Muslims all around the globe. My favorite part is where the black woman in the U.S. takes shahada and converts from being an alcohol drinking, late night clubbing, sick woman to a Muslim. There is something about a woman that covers her hair and body that makes here a more decent human being. We in America are lost. That is the majority of us. I used to be a lost soul until I found this great religion. It has the guidance that every human being can follow and be morally successful. No other religion including Christianity has the power to straighten an individual out like Islam. It is the answer to the problems, not a cause of them. It is being attacked, for the devil truth and will do anything to stop it from being heard. The devil prefers Christianity, where you can smoke crack, have unregulated sex, and drink alcohol and its ok because Jesus died for your sins. To find the truth in life takes deep thinking. Take a closer look at yourself and at the world around you and you will understand why people are coming in droves to the way of life called ISLAM.

Based on the best-selling book, IS THE FATHER OF JESUS THE GOD OF MUHAMMAD? by Dr. Timothy George.
Words unfamiliar to most Americans are now heard daily on the evening news: jihad, Islam, Allah, Quran, fatwa, imam, ummah, Ramadan. Today, there are approximately seven million Muslims, and more than 13,000 mosques in North America. Now that Muslims are our neighbors, how do we talk to them about Christ? What do Muslims think about Jesus? Which beliefs do we share in common with Muslims and where do we differ from them? Do we worship the same God they worship? Is the Father of Jesus the God of Muhammad?
Noted theologian, best-selling author, editor, and Dean of Beeson Divinity School at Samford University, Dr. Timothy George, teams with T N Mohan, producer-director of the award winning films, Hanged on a Twisted Cross, Here I Stand, For One English Officer, to answer these and other in this visually rich four-part TV series. Dr. George is dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University and an executive editor of Christianity Today.
The series avoids the angry condemnation of all Muslims on the one hand, or a compromising of Christian truth-claims on the other. Muslim views are stated fairly and objectively from Muslim scholars who appear in the series. The programs set forth basic and foundational differences between Christianity and Islam and the implications for how we understand God, Christ, and the meaning of salvation.

good but not for the classroom.......2007-03-19
As a teacher I was hoping to use this DVD to help with some lessons to Muslim students on some of the doctrines of christianity compared with those of Islam but it was a bit boring. It would have been more interesting had the Muslims responded to Dr. George's teachings and it be more like a debate or different presentations rather than Dr. George spending 20 minutes teaching the Christian position. I also think it was too expensive for one cd which does not offer much to help in the classroom with secondary students. I wish someone would make a dvd similar to this but more exciting for students.
A Well Intentioned Lesson in Religious Conversion.......2006-09-22
As other reviewers have suggested, this DVD offers information filtered through a devout American Christian lens. A sincere attempt is made here to understand the basic tenants of the Muslim faith and Islamic tradition and history. However, the viewer gets the definite impression that this video is appropriate for a Midwest church fellowship meeting trying to understand beings from another planet. The intention to convert the misguided Muslims into evangelical Christians is both blantant and patronizing. If you are seeking objective information, this is not your best choice. However, if your quest is for ideological justification masquerading as education, you've found the right vehicle.
DVD is a true Christian perspective.......2006-04-04
This DVD has indeed as part of its agenda converting the Muslim. A true Christian analysis will always have that goal, so if you are looking for a "secular" non-religious, or a non-traditional or liberal Christian viewpoint, this is not for you. However, the Christian/Islam analysis is fair and balanced. The presentation respects Islam but clearly shows the differences. The presentation has Muslim leaders and scholars, and quotes from the Quran, pointing out the differences between Islam and Christianity. This is a very respectable approach for a Christian based analysis. I recommend this DVD to any who want to hear a presentation that is fair and also holds to faith in Jesus Christ.
Another attemp for not so good purpose.......2006-01-02
This is not a dialog DVD but a tool to be used to convert muslim to be Christian. It is not so convincing either. Lots of information about christianity are so confusing. Only positive feedback is Islamic speakers are Muslim and this part is objective.

Product Description
The West is engaged in what has become known as the war on terror." It seems like a noble endeavor. But the very name indicates a failure to grasp the true root cause of the problem. Only Muslims and a few informed non-Muslims understand that it is in actuality the inevitable conflict between Islam and the entire free world. And it is not a war that will be over any time soon. Today, with international travel, the information super highway, and the unwillingness of our leaders to acknowledge the true root of the problem, non-Muslim countries will continue to experience jihad Islamic holy war against the "infidels."
Jihad has not only produced riots, regional battles, and terror campaigns; it has not only spawned an army of people willing to be martyred for its cause; it has now resulted in nothing less than a real World War. And Muslims who participate in this new war do so because it is encouraged in fact commanded in both the Quran and the Hadith.

good effort.......2002-07-01
Most documentaries on Islam tend to focus on the religion as a whole as opposed to the people that make up Islam. This news documentary focuses on Muslims just as the title suggests. This video takes us to Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Turkey, Nigeria, and America to listen to Muslim activists, scholars, mainstream Muslims, moderates and others who have opinions on Islam. In each country visited, a brief historical summary of Islam is given. Some countries are given more detailed historical backgrounds than others. The program begins by visiting professors of Sociology and Islamic History discussing the negative impact western civilization has had on Islam and Muslims. It is also explained very clearly why Muslims often look down on the western ideology.
In this program we see that not all Muslims are the same. We see Muslims who praise Osama Bin Laden and we see Muslims who are angrier at other Muslims than anyone else for condoning terroism. A recent convert in LA who wears the Hijaab is profiled and talks of the reasons she accepted Islam. There is also a Saudi-American Muslim sister profiled who does not wear Hijaab and seems very Americanized. This Saudi-American sister founded an organizaton called "Muslims Against Terroism" in response to the Sept. 11 terroist attacks. Although she talks of not being accepted in some Islamic circles for not wearing the Hijaab, she says she feels very secure in her connection to Islam. The commentator also says "she has found her own way to be a Muslim". One segment shows her in a classroom emphasizing to the nonmuslim students that the veil is not a representation of Islam nor is it required. As long as there are Muslims who teach things like this, there will be more amunition for nonmuslims to say that the Hijaab is "outdated", "backwords" and "oppresive".
The division between African-Americans and Arabs in Islam is mentioned but not discussed in any significant detail. The fact that the first Muslims in this country were African slaves was not even mentioned. This would have fit in perfectly with a historical summary of Islam in America and its popularity with African-Americans.
