Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino finds a happier use for bleak material earlier found in HBO's 2003 Curse of the Bambino. Where the latter told the seemingly endless saga of the Boston Red Sox's misfortunes since team owner Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919, Reverse picks up the story to include Boston's stunning victory in the 2004 World Series. Many of the quotes and archival footage included in the original Curse are here, including anguished commentary from such Beantown enthusiasts as comics Denis Leary and Steven Wright, author Robert B. Parker, and former columnist Mike Barnicle. Painful recollections of the Yankees' perennial domination of the Red Sox, of countless screw-ups that snatched world championships from the team's hands for 86 years, and the redemptive story of Boston's 2004 comeback in a 3-0 series against the Yankees (and subsequent sweep of the Cardinals in the World Series) make this a uniquely moving (and funny) baseball documentary. --Tom Keogh
Description
In 1918 the Boston Red Sox won their fifth World Series, thanks in great part to a young pitching and hitting sensation from the slums of Baltimore, named George Herman Ruth, a.k.a. The Babe, or The Bambino. A year later, after not advancing to the playoffs, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold the Babe to the New York Yankees. In turn, the Bronx Bombers went on to win an incredible 26 World Series titles. Die-hard Red Sox fans who have lived their entire lives lamenting this trade have come to refer to it as the Curse of the Bambino. The Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino features new footage from the devastating '03 pennant loss, the highlights of the historic '04 playoff victories and the World Series sweep. In addition, this acclaimed documentary combines unforgettable archival footage with contemporary interviews that focus on the true Red Sox fans who have been dreaming of the day they could see the Curse put to rest, once and for all.

1 Of The BEST!.......2007-05-07
I live in Illinois so we have to put up with mainly CUB fans. However, there IS a Team that DID win a WS a few years ago named the WHITE SOX! 4 of my fave teams have gotten into the WS (DBACKS/RED SOX/WHITE SOX & CARDS). This docu is truthful/funny & Denis Leary's comments are right on! I've always been a BOSOX fan & was on edge watching the WS, especially when they were thisclose from being eliminated by the dreaded Yankees which we saw CHOKE! HA! HA! HA! It was a beautiful thing! I sure hope HBO will release the Wait Till Next Year with the CUBBUMS so we can see how pathetic they've been in '69 & beyond!
One Of Our Fave Baseball Sagas!.......2007-04-15
My Hubby & I are avid MLB fans, especially the Bosox, White Sox/DBacks/Cards/Reds...Well, you get the idea! Anyway: When we 1st saw it on HBO, we were joyful/angry/laughing & crying. Denis Leary is a hoot!
Those die hard Red Sox fans waited so long & they deserve that! Our White Sox got their W.S., the Cards got theirs in '06 & the Dbacks in 2001.
We're waiting for HBO to release the (sorry) Cub Bums Documentary "Wait Till Next Year". We live near Chi. but love the South Siders. We're so tired of those "traditionalists" who have suffered. We'll see what they can do in 007. We won't hold our breath!
Win This For..........2007-03-18
I watched this HBO special before 2004 when it was called Curse of the Bambino. The new version has to be seen from the beginning to experience again the total joy of 2004. There are some early moments almost too painful to see again: Yaz' knees buckling as he sees Dent's wind driven pop up get over the wall, Shiraldi's deer in the headlights expression on the mound during the 86 Series, Spaceman's release of the slow curve to Perez in 75.
But this is all redeemed by the most improbable events in sports history. This DVD makes you feel again how unlikely the Sox comeback was. As one person says, if it was a movie nobody would believe it.
There is one perfect segment in the film where each of the people interviewed chokes up when talking about the Sox victory and is momentarily unable to continue. Dennis Leary, Steven Wright and regular fans are all effected the same way. 2004 was an emotionally overwhelming experience and this DVD brings it back again.
The last segment with Sox fans celebrating the win with departed relatives at gravesites captures the true depth of Red Sox Nation feeling but can be difficult to watch.
This is a great DVD to view with your kids. Mine slowly gravitated to the screen as I watched and were riveted. By the end, I think they understood their "crazy Red Sox fan father" a little better.
A Must Own for Any Red Sox Fan!.......2007-01-12
This is a great recap of that magical 2004 Red Sox season. The reflections of the fans in the video allows the viewer to relive the agony, and the ecstasy of Red Sox baseball over the last century. I was especially moved by the strong emotions that people still had as they recalled the moment the Red Sox won the Series. Even now, I get goosebumps. For all loyal Red Sox fans out there, buy this video! You will not be disappointed. Red Sox. Forever.
Reverse the Curse of the Bambino.......2007-01-12
You must be a baseball fan and especially a Boston Red Sox fan. This DVD is so funny and true. My whole family loved it except for one Yankee fan and he has his own curses to deal with. Loved it.

HBO's wry, enlightening account of 80-plus years of the Boston Red Sox's travails is a fusion of wit and history. "Everything's going fine," says one of this documentary's talking heads, speaking of the Red Sox's legacy of 11th-hour screw-ups. "Then: boom. It's like watching The Wizard of Oz and Dorothy is ripped apart at the end by flying monkeys." Comic Steven Wright compares the team's history to a Dickens novel, and Denis Leary says love of the Red Sox is "sado-masochism." The problem is that Boston's doomstruck organization, fans say, has been in karmic payback since 1920 for then-owner Harry Frazee's sale of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. Historians dismiss claims that Frazee used the money to finance Broadway's No, No, Nanette, and there's evidence the self-destructive Ruth had actually become a liability for the team. In any case, the symbiotic fortunes of the Yankees and Red Sox is entertainingly summarized here. --Tom Keogh

Told with humor in the face of heartache, this acclaimed documentary combines archival footage with contemporary interviews and focuses not on the players who have come and gone, but on the diehard fans who live their lives lamenting what some have come to call The Curse of the Bambino.

NDB got it right.......2004-12-31
Someone named "NDB" (and I'm willing to bet a princely sum of money that he goes by "NDBoston" in certain other online venues...ahem) hit it right on the head. There is no curse. There never was. Glad that the phantasm of a curse managed to put Dan Shaughnessy's kids through college OK, but the Red Sox have had damned good reasons why they've lost over the years, and none of them has to do with ghosts, specters, curses or other figments of the imagination.
None of which takes away from the unbridled joy that we all feel in Red Sox Nation at this wonderful, beautiful championship.
(By the way, NDB, Shank is still gonna prime that pump. Check this site for enthralling details of the windy-titled "Legend of the Curse of the Bambino," due to hit stores in May, and deep-discount racks in July or August at the latest.)
who's laughing now!.......2004-12-25
To all the Stankees Fans: WHO IS LAUGHING NOW! RED SOX NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This DVD isn't relevant at all and never was........2004-11-02
I'm sure CHB is upset because his gravy train has been disrailed, but the truth is this curse was always something the media loved to bring up instead of talking about racist owners and bad baseball decisions.
Except for Dan's relatives saying how you should buy this DVD, this story is due to hit the bargain bin anyday now. The Dollar Store will have it too.
I'm sorry Dan. Now you are really going to have to work to write your column.
This is still relevant stuff.......2004-10-31
If you want to know why it is such a big deal that the Boston Red Sox won the World Series, you should check this out. It neatly summerizes all the facts and superstitions that surrounded this team for 86 years, not including the 2003 season. Watching this on HBO made me a Rex Sox fan over a year ago. Consider this a condenced first part of a trilogy that includes "Still, We Believe", and whatever Red Sox Championship DVD is soon to come out.
