4 out of 5 stars Usual suspects.......2007-09-03

This DVD is a good quality DVD version containing several different shows on one disk. My daughter (3yrs old) loves it, and we take it with us on road trips. It is of course some of the same shows that are on TV, so your child may have already seen them, however this doesn't seem to be a bad thing from my child's point of view. She prefers to watch this DVD over, and over, and..

The Backyardigans are a group of five children who all live near each other, and all get together to play in their backyards. They join up, play in their imaginations, and then have a snack at one of their houses. If your child like singing, music, dancing, fantastic imaginative play, they will certainly enjoy this. I would recommend it for kids over 2, probably in the 3-5yr old range, as the kids talk faster than other shows (like Dora), and the words are less enunciated, so some children may have trouble understanding what the kids say.

All in all, I find myself watching this with my daughter, and enjoying it.

This was delivered right on the release date! My son was so happy! Great product and great shipping. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars My son loves the Backyardigans.......2007-08-23

My 2 1/2 year old son loves the backyardigans and there is not one episode that he can't watch. He likes the idea of the mermaids and the submarine under water. We pretty much own all the dvds and they help me to get things done.

5 out of 5 stars The Backyardigans are Back!.......2007-08-21

We love The Backyardigans in our house and can watch it over and over again. We were pretty disappointed in Movers and Shakers, but with Into the Deep, the Backyardigans are back in excellent form! All 4 episodes are fun, with catchy tunes that moms and dads will find themselves humming. Each episode ends well - no funny, abrupt endings - and my son loves the fact that one of the snacks is sushi!

Our personal top 3 Backyardigans DVDs are now:
Into the Deep
Legend of the Volcano Sisters
Surf's Up

This is a must for any fan!

5 out of 5 stars A Backyardigans medley.......2007-08-19

The Backyardigans series is one of the few children's shows that can be watched over and over again without causing involuntary twitches, nervous breakdowns or constant eye rolling on the part of adults. The five characters are extremely likeable, the episodes highly imaginative, and the selection of a different genre of music for each episode is a stroke of creative genius.

Two of the episodes on this DVD qualify for special praise in the musical department, and these are "Into the Deep" which uses Bollywood melodies, and "Catch That Butterfly" which is pure operatic brilliance. "Save the Day" is psychedelic soul and "Newsflash" is inspired by Motown music.

A summary of the four episodes on this DVD is below:

"Into the Deep" (summarized to the tune "Octopus's Garden")

Here you will see, under the sea
Tasha and Uniqua's garden in the shade
But don't go in, they'll cause a din
A little mermaids' garden escapade

Then undersea, came P and T
With their underwater plans for a movie
The girls freak out, and start to shout
But everything works out eventually

"Newsflash" (summarized to the tune "Oh What a Beautiful Morning")

There's some bright golden corn in the cornfields
There's some bright golden corn in the cornfields
The news people sigh, no newsflashes arise
When down at the farm, two guys sensationalize

Oh what a beautiful newsflash
Oh what a beautiful sight
I've got a wonderful feeling That there will be some news tonight

"Save the Day" (summarized to the tune "Pop Goes the Weasel")

Round and round the Harbor Patrol
The lady chased the whopper
The lady told them to get lost
And they couldn't stop her!

A jet ski for a sea of sharks
A chopper for a rescue
That's the way the story goes
Oh! What a whopper!

"Catch That Butterfly" (original lyrics from "Obsession" by Animotion)

I will have you
Yes I will have you
I will find a way and I will have you
Like a butterfly
A wild butterfly
I will collect you and capture you

No more needs to be said about this absolutely brilliant episode about a British bug collector and two helpful stagecoach drivers. Hi-ho old chap, I've said a mouthful here.

5 out of 5 stars One and only one reason.......2007-06-16

There is mainly one reason to buy this movie, the action is so/so, the plot is grossly contrived, but the saving grace for this film is in the underwater camera work. By that I am referring exclusively to the way the cameraman follows Jessica Alba around from behind underwater as she swims. There is no nudity, there needs to be no nudity, this is simply a film about the hottest woman in known existences butt. Its super high def Jessica Alba, you'll be on the slow mo button half the film anyway so I doubt you'll notice an actual story.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Action Adventure Film.......2007-03-10

I enjoyed this alluring film.I found it to be very interesting and thoroughly engrossing. The cast (Paul Walker, Josh Brolin and Scott Caan) was refreshing. The score composed by Paul Haslinger was very effective. Shades of Peter Benchley's THE DEEP seem to glitter in the waters here.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-02-28

I liked this movie. I am a Jessica Alba fan and mainly got it for that reason. The movie is kind of flaky in the sense that the storyline is not original nor is it necessarily a great story. It did have enough action and Jessica Alba to make it a good movie though. I would watch it again, though its not going to make my top 50 movies. Worth it for a bargain price.

4 out of 5 stars Jessica Alba looking good in Blu-Ray!.......2006-12-14

Story Synopsis:
If you are a clothing minimalist, Into The Blue is for you. With the azure skies and crystal waters of the Bahamas their backyard, Jared (Walker) and his girlfriend, Sam (Alba), enjoy a peaceful existence...and incredible tans. But, with the arrival of Sam's childhood friend, Bryce (Caan), and his girlfriend Amanda (Scott), and the subsequent discovering of a possible sunken treasure, greed rears its head jeopardizing not only their friendship, but their very lives.

Disc Picture:
The 2.32:1 MPEG-2 Blu-ray Disc picture looks great, overall. There is a purposely oversaturated look to the picture, with blown-out whites and colors. The underwater color schemes seem to really look good as well. The picture quality is outstanding, with beautiful locales, which is improved of course by the presence of Jessica Alba.

Soundtrack:
The linear PCM 5.1-channel soundtrack uses a broad front stage, good surround integration, and well-recorded dialogue to deliver an enjoyable audio experience. Deep bass is not very prevalent, making the soundtrack sound a bit thin.

3 out of 5 stars Underwater Thriller.......2006-11-17

Jared (Paul Walker) works as a scuba teacher but dreams of being a treasure hunter who finds a gold-laden shipwreck. His girlfriend Sam (Jessica Alba) supports him in all that he does and truly loves him. When Jared's brother Bryce (Scott Caan) shows up with a new girlfriend Amanda (Ashley Scott) luck seems to go their way. They have access to a boat and have found a few scattered remnants of a wreck that might be the pirate ship that's supposed to be the mother lode of treasure ships. Unfortunately, a plane with cocaine has crashed into the ocean nearby and complicates the situation when the drug runners come looking for their lost product. Further trouble happens as everyone argue how best to proceed with the search for the treasure ship, and what to do about the cocaine.

John Stockwell directed the movie and does an amazing job of shooting eye-catching imagery that's stunning on the Blu-ray presentation. I found myself getting sidetracked more than once by the seascape captured in the camera lens, and the fact that I noticed it at all while Jessica Alba was swimming around in a bikini is saying a lot. The audio portion of the movie is packaged uncompressed, allowing the film to take full advantage of a surround sound system and throughly wow the audiophile.

Although INTO THE BLUE doesn't go anywhere spectacular for the experienced moviegoer (films like THE DEEP and A SIMPLE PLAN offer similar plot lines and conflict), it does deliver a very watchable story. The added bonus of the incredible underwater imagery and the impeccable sound system is worth getting the movie in Blu-ray if you don't already have it on DVD.

As a thriller, INTO THE BLUE works. And it's a great buddy flick. Not exactly date material, but if you're with someone who likes action and tension, this will fit the bill nicely.

Stunning tropical scenery and gorgeous athletic movie stars may not make a movie great, but they sure don't hurt. Jared (Paul Walker, The Fast and the Furious) dreams of finding sunken treasure and making millions, but his girlfriend Sam (Jessica Alba, Fantastic Four, Sin City) is content with their poor but idyllic life in the Bahamas. Still, when they find artifacts from a 19th century pirate ship, she gets caught up in the excitement--until they also find a crashed plane full of smuggled cocaine. Naturally, someone's going to want that cocaine back... From there, Into the Blue is a surprisingly well-plotted action movie, unpredictable in its specifics if familiar in its broader outlines. Even more pleasant, the action itself stays plausible and genuinely engaging throughout. Jared seems able to hold his breath for a preternaturally long time, but aside from that the movie is meticulous about the dangers and threats the characters face and is all the stronger for it. Add to this its unabashed ogling of Alba and Walker (both of whom are astonishing physical specimens) and you have a solid romp. Also featuring Scott Caan (Ocean's Eleven), Tyson Beckford (Biker Boyz), and Josh Brolin (Flirting With Disaster) as a slimy rival treasure hunter. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Cussler Lite.......2007-09-04

Sometimes this film reminds one of a Clive Cussler novel, having many of the main ingredients, which include sunken cargo, deep sea diving, and some corruption on the high seas. Paul Walker and Jessica Alba are okay, but really seem to garner roles such as these more for their looks than any type of specific talent within their overall acting ability. In the end it could be chalked up to be a popcorn thriller, but it might be better if the same kind of plot and theme was mixed up with a more serious collection of actors and actresses.

1 out of 5 stars ..........2007-08-04

People are giving this movie waaaay too much credit. So it has Jessica Alba in it. So what. If I wanted to see a beautiful body I'd pick up a copy of my roommate's Maxim magazine. The gorgeous ocean shots? Well... it reminded me that I really need to subscribe to National Geographic already. While those two features made the movie vaguely tolerable, I'm certainly not going to applaud it for it and bestow pity stars upon it.

There is so little actual plot in this movie that they had to resort to long, pointless shots. The ones that stick out in my mind are when we see the two main characters frolicking in the ocean in the beginning of the movie for just around five minutes. At least that one was kind of visually appealing. Later on there is a party scene and I swear we fast-forwarded through at least two minutes of pointless parying. Not even the punches thrown really factor into the ending at all.

The characters are completely shallow and one dimensional. The only reason I was rooting for the main character was because Sam liked him. Otherwise he could have died and I would not have minded one iota. The only real reason I cared about Sam was because she was the beautiful Jessica Alba. (Although her consistent refusal to ignore her morals was pretty endearing also... although I found myself disappointed when she came back. Or, more accurately, at the reason she came back.)

The acting is basically atrocious.... although I suspect that considering the awful dialog that was written for them it would have been hard to come across as realistic. Sadly, the film would have probably actually WORKED best as a silent film... the plot was simplistic enough that it could have been conveyed without actual dialog. Just give us the kind of bar piano that accompanies the Charlie Chaplain silent films and I could almost see this becoming a three star work of art.

Unlike The Living Sea, its Oscar ®-nominated predecessor, IMAX's Into the Deep confines itself to one location--the Channel Islands off the coast of California. But what a location it is! Directed by Howard Hall (Island of the Sharks) and narrated by actress Kate Nelligan, this exquisitely shot feature follows a number of the colorful creatures who live among the area's kelp beds as they build their living quarters, fight to protect them, mate, and die. Some of the more notable sequences include the aggressive mating dance of the fiery Garibaldi fish, the arduous molting of a lobster (captured with time-lapse photography), and the sophisticated synchronized movements of a school of silvery Spanish mackerel that sparkle and shine in the sunlight streaming in from above. Colors (especially reds and blues) that really pop, spare and unobtrusive narration, and a playful soundtrack make this fascinating film ideal for repeat viewing. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Filmed off the coast of Southern California, this fascinating film journeys to an enchanting underwater world of swaying kelp forests and glowing corals. Swim nose to nose with colorful garibaldi, starfish and sharks, play tag with sea lions, and observe the rarely-seen behavior of the creatures of the eternal undersea night.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointingly short.......2006-08-07

This is really a short DVD. I was expecting much more. It's not even the 35 minutes they claim it has. It's only 32 min on my player. Not that three minutes make a big difference, but the overall content is not so great either. However, the picture quality is excellent and the scenery is superb, this I must admit. The other dissapointing thing is the "Special Features" section. The only special feature they show is a theatrical trailer to other IMAX films (about 3 minutes in length.........)Go figure!!! Ocean Oasis, on the contrary is a superb production with excellent "Special Bonuses". Don't buy "Into the Deep", if you're hesitating. It's not worth the high price.

I can't explain the other two reviews in this column, but I am a conniseur of this type of material and this is one of the most perfect marriages of music and scenery ever to grace my dvd player. It is a deeply brilliant look at the kelp forrest and it's inhabitants, and will put you in a trance that lasts long after the film ends. Trust me - if u have ANY interest in this material - get this NOW. On the same level, WINGED MIGRATION is a must as well.

2 out of 5 stars Like a runway model..........2003-08-23

...this DVD may be beautiful, but it is utterly lacking in substance. With not nearly enough meat to warrant a DVD, Into the Deep runs like a long teaser for a much more in-depth and expansive exploration of underwater life, deep sea exploration, particular species of sea life...just about anything except what you might see in your first scuba lesson, if you were lucky enough to go on that lesson in these particular California depths. Leave this one on the proverbial shelf.

      4 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-03-08

The movie was a little disappointing. We had hoped for so much more information but it just wasn't there. The scenery was spectacular and I did learn about the Galapagos but it did not live up to what I was hoping for.

2 out of 5 stars Does not do the Enchanted Islands any justice..........2006-08-25

Used to some great IMAX productions, I was very keen on seeing this production, but was very disapointed with the cinematic result of such a large and costly undertaking. The production was marred with challenges, including reduced flora and fauna after a devastating El Nino and the tragic death of two team members. I fully understand that these and other circumstances diminished the amount of quality footage the crew was able to obtain during their 8 weeks in the Enchanted Islands, however, I would have hoped for a documentary that truly introduces these natural marvels to the viewers instead of focusing on a very superficial plot of a marine biologist getting her thrills in exploring the deep ocean floor surrounding the islands in a submarine. There is so much to tell and show about these islands that a one hour program will never be able to do it justice, however I would have expected a better effort in documenting the uniqueness of the flora and fauna and the history of the islands, including the dangers presented to them through fishing, over population and introduced species. I sincerely hope that in the near future a producer finds the courage to do these islands justice by returning with an IMAX team to film a documentary that will allow the world to share the wonders of the Enchanted Islands - maybe he will want to call it "IMAX - Galapagos Revisited"

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-04-04

I was disappointed with this movie. The director had an interesting, unique environment he could have pointed his camera toward - the island's vegetation and wildlife are the two things I had hoped to see. Instead the first half of the movie is focused on a woman biologist's bare legs, and the second half is focused on the people and the sub retrieving deep water marine life.

Perhaps the film is targeted toward younger audiences which the director feels can't assimilate more than a few species of animals, birds, and fish.

For an IMAX feast for the eyes, I recommend Amazon. It's scenic and informative.

4 out of 5 stars Galapagos: Again worthy of the IMAX name.......2005-10-21

The film was wonderful! The backgroud music is flawlessly matched with the wonderfully crisp photography. The only reason I did not award it a five was that I wish Darwin could have played a larger role; although, he was mentioned several times. Without my bias it would be a five. I liked that the movie focused on a female scientist which is still the exception for nature videos these days. I would highly recomend this film for any age group from elementary to college. For the price, it would be tough if not impossible to find and equal.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful images, but tacky, misleading storyline.......2005-01-18

I agree with the other reviewers that this should be entitled 'Underwater life around the Galapagos'. The movie spends far too much time underwater instead of focusing on the magnificent scenery and wildlife on land. Why can't the IMAX producers simply let the gorgeous images of wildlife speak for themselves instead of dreaming up a tacky storyline about a beautiful marine biologist and her oh so dangerous explorations? At one point she rappels down into a cave and worries about the possibility that the rocks above her will collapse. I was in the Galapagos last month and visited the same cave (on the island of Santa Cruz) - what they don't tell you is that there are stairs into the cave from the other end! The naturalist guides we spoke with in the Galapagos regard the IMAX movie as a joke, all the sadder because members of the IMAX team died making the film.
